Economaki Named Chili Bowl Nationals Grand Marshall

TULSA, Okla. (December 1, 2004) -- Chris Economaki, Editor and Publisher Emeritus of National Speed Sport News, has been selected as Grand Marshall for the 19th Annual O'Reilly Chili Bowl Midget Nationals, which will be held January 5-8, 2005, at Tulsa Expo Raceway.

The undisputed "Dean of American Motorsports Journalism", Economaki has been at the Editor's desk of the nation's most influential weekly motorsports publication in the country, National Speed Sport News, since 1950.

"Chris Economaki's background in auto racing is unmatched, he's seen just about everything there is to see in the world of racing," commented Chili Bowl co-promoter Emmett Hahn. "I don't think he's seen the Chili Bowl yet though, so it'll be a real honor to have him here this January."

In addition to his duties with NSSN, Economaki played a major role in the evolution of motorsports coverage on television. Beginning in 1961, Economaki covered most of the motorsports events on ABC's Wide World of Sports as well as the special telecasts of the Indianapolis 500. He then moved to CBS-TV, where for nearly eleven more years he traveled to the world's greatest motorsports events for that network.

In addition to the Indy 500, other events Economaki covered for television included Formula One Grand Prix races, the LeMans 24-hour Grand Prix of Endurance, the Daytona 500, Australia's Bathurst 1000, the East African Safari and many more.

Over the course of his distinguished career, Economaki has been the recipient of countless awards and has already been inducted into several Halls of Fame.

Economaki will play a role in the Saturday evening, January 8, opening ceremonies, as a packed house watches intently to see which of the 200-plus entries will ultimately come away with the coveted Golden Driller winner's trophy in the 19th Annual O'Reilly Chili Bowl Midget Nationals.
