O'REILLY CHILI BOWL MIDGET NATIONALS: MAKING THE CUT
TULSA, Okla. (January 6, 2006) -- With the entry count at an all-time record 269, simply making the starting grid for the Saturday night, January 14, 24-car O'Reilly Chili Bowl Midget Nationals will be a feat in and of itself.
Since the inaugural running of the event at Tulsa Expo Raceway in 1987, a total of 154 different drivers have started at least one Chili Bowl championship main event.
Now set for the 20th Anniversary of the event, which takes place January 11-14, just 53 of the entered drivers have Chili Bowl Saturday night "Main Event" experience.
Heading the list is the only four-time winner in event history, Sammy Swindell. Swindell made his first of 14 feature starts in the Original Chili Bowl of 1987, when he finished sixth. Swindell returns to the Chili Bowl after a two-year absence, with his last Tulsa Expo Raceway victory drive in 1998.
Swindell is one of two drivers that competed in the First Chili Bowl feature, the other being Sooner State native Shane Carson. Carson finished fourth behind Rich Vogler, Gene Gennetten and Kevin Doty in that first Chili Bowl.Missouri's Danny Lasoski and Indiana's Dave Darland enter this year's edition of the Chili Bowl sharing the longest active streak of Chili Bowl championship feature starts, with each driver among the Saturday night's final starting grid during each of the past five years.
