ARDC MIDGETS NOW 0-FOR-3 IN '05; BOTH RACES IN NC ARE WASHED OUT

Hazleton, PA - Evidently, Mother Nature is not a fan of the midgets, because the teams of the American Racing Drivers Club (ARDC) continue to be plagued by rainy weather. For the third week in a row, the wet stuff has washed out the season opener for the ARDC Midgets. This time, both of the Southern Swing events were rained out. The midgets were scheduled to compete at Dixieland Speedway in Elizabeth City, NC, on Friday, May 6. Heavy rains on Friday forced promoter Red Swain to throw in the towel early that morning.

County Line Raceway promoter James Upchurch also postponed the ARDC event scheduled for his facility on Saturday, May 7. Citing the uncertainty of the wet weather, combined with the high gasoline prices on a possible wasted trip for the ARDC travelers, Upchurch and Swain decided to work together to find another weekend, later in the season, and bring the midgets back for a full weekend of racing in Dixie.

To his credit, Upchurch allowed "any ARDC teams who had already made the trip south to practice at his track, if we are able to race at County Line on Saturday."

After two rain-outs at Lincoln Speedway, and the postponement of both events on the Southern Swing, the ARDC teams are now hoping that their next stop, at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday, May 13, will bring them sunshine and dry conditions.

Ongoing discussions between the Grove's management, ARDC officials, and the ARDC drivers and car owners will provide the answer as to whether or not the midgets will race with wings, or without. ARDC will attempt to contact its teams as soon as a solution has been reached regarding this issue.

The midgets will take part in qualifying heats and a 20-lap feature at Williams Grove. Perhaps Mother Nature just wanted to see the ARDC season opener take place at the Grove, and that's why the event at Lincoln and the two races down south fell victim to the weather.

Everyone is understandably hopeful that the opener will finally take place this Friday, May 13, at Williams Grove. The midgets will share the card with the 410 Sprint Cars, and Lance Dewease, a five-time track champion at the historic half-mile oval, will strap into the Miller Racing Team no. 00, as he tries for his second career ARDC Midget victory. And the midget of Ed Stimely, Jr. will be on display before the races begin at Williams Grove. Fans will get an up-close look at an ARDC midget, and the former series champion will be on hand for autographs and photos.
