Phil DiMario Wins Second Straight ARDC Main At Evergreen
St. John's, Pa., August 1, 1998 - Phil DiMario won his second consecutive ARDC CARQUEST Midget Series feature on Saturday night at Evergreen Raceway. Last week DiMario became the first two-time feature winner with ARDC in 1998 and this week DiMario accomplished a personal first. He has never won two weeks in a row in his career, until Saturday night. Doug Borger of Kunkletown, Pa. took the lead at the start of the race. Borger, Donnie Trent and Lew Blair paced the field for six laps. On lap six, the Yetter No.6 Midget, driven by defending ARDC Champion and current points leader, Ed Stimely, Jr., came to a stop in turn one and brought out the first caution of the race. It also ended the Yetter/Stimely team's bid for another win. On the restart, as the Midgets raced down the backstretch, the No.96 of Jim Jackson got sideways and flipped onto its side. Jackson was not injured. In fact, he was able to continue in the race. When the Midgets went back to racing, Borger was still out in front but Phil DiMario and Bryan Kobylarz were both flying through the field. DiMario got by Borger on lap 11 and Kobylarz followed in pursuit of the new leader. As DiMario negotiated his way through lapped traffic, Kobylarz tried to find the opportunity to use the slower cars to his advantage to get past DiMario's No.23. DiMario successfully held his position to win the first ARDC race at Evergreen Raceway since 1992. The win is DiMario's third career Midget victory at Evergreen. He won twice at the Saint John's, Pa. asphalt oval in 1990. Bryan Kobylarz was second in the Starrett Racing No.49 and Doug Borger, Donnie Trent and Mark Freeland completed the top five. Dan Shelbo received the Pennzoil product award for the second time this season.
After the race DiMario talked about the race as he enjoyed the gourmet meal that's prepared for the McCabe MotorSports Team in their trailer after each race. "I have never won two races in a row! And, this is my third win at Evergreen. We had this motor apart all week and just put it back in the car last night. We feel good about these motors we're doing at my shop. I can't wait to get back on the dirt."
The ARDC CARQUEST Midget Series moves to Port Royal Speedway in Port Royal, Pa. on Saturday, August 8, and then to Lincoln Speedway in New Oxford, Pa. on Saturday, August 22.
