TRG Finishes 18th Overall, 6th in Class at Le Mans
Le Mans, France -- June 13, 2004 -- After a flawless race in which the most serious problem that befell the #81 TRG Porsche was a suspected flat tire, drivers Lars Nielsen, Ian Donaldson and Gregor Fisken came home 18th overall, and 6th in class, starting from 42nd overall. The stunning swirled blue Porsche completed 314 laps of the famed Sarthe circuit. After several stirring battles with GT class cars and a few exhilarating incidents with the far faster LM1 and LM2 prototypes, the car came home with only pebble and sand damage, save for a bit of duct tape to reinforce a sagging bumper.
Lars Nielsen final thoughts: "Everybody tells me that I need to feel proud -- I guess I should but I haven't grasped it yet. Finishing this race is beyond comprehension at the moment. It has been fantastic to be with a crew who really, really know what they're doing. That has been instrumental in enabling us to do what we have achieved today --the crew are the first people that I'd like to thank. What we'll do for the future I don't know yet, I have to go home tomorrow and soak this experience in. We have an LMES race in three weeks at the Nurburgring, and it's safe to say that all the prerequisites for further success lies within the people who have brought this Le Mans race to the #81 car. We have an honest shot at the podium at the Nurburgring -- the car and the crew are up to it."
Kevin Buckler said: "Unbelieveable-- it just feels so good to plan something out for months and watch it be executed flawlessly. My hat is off to the drivers, the crew and the entire team. Steady, smart, no mistakes and perfect preparation-- I'm really proud."
Gregor Fisken, who drove brilliantly at his maiden race at Le Mans, was enthused about the entire experience. "I feel on top of the world -- I think it was only in the last few laps of my last stint that the enormity and what we'd achieved started to sink in. I think that for our first Le Mans it couldn't have gone better. I can't wait until next year! Big thanks to all at The Racer's Group and to Lars and Ian for driving the car so well."
Ian Donaldson, who elected to run the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the first time instead of running the 24 Hours of Nurburgring for the tenth time, was delighted with the race. "The last three laps of the race, all I could think about was finishing. I heard every rattle, and felt every bump, and watched every mirror at once-- my heart was absolutely pounding. I'm thrilled to have been here, thrilled to have run such a perfect race, and thrilled it's over with! Since Sebring, I've thought of nothing else aside from this race, and it feels amazing to have run it, to have finished it, and to have come home sixth."
