The Le Mans 24 Hours will be this weekend and the Quifel ASM Team is already in France, confident that it can finish the race with a historical result for Portuguese auto racing. The only Portuguese team taking part in the legendary French race plans to win one of the top three spots in the LMP2 class.
In order to reach this target, the team will be assisted in Le Mans by British driver Guy Smith, who won the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2003 and wh9o together with drivers Miguel Pais do Amaral and Olivier Pla will try to bring a result to Portugal that will make the Portuguese proud.
Today the Quifel ASM Team has already had a taste of the fantastic atmosphere at the 77th edition of the 24 Hour Le Mans race. The first checks and free training on the track began Wednesday and Thursday is qualification day for the race that begins Saturday and ends only on Sunday.
In order to prepare for what is the world's best-known endurance race, the Quifel ASM Team was the Algarve racetrack to carry out final checks on the Zytek 09, the car that the team bought this year to make it more competitive.
Antonio Simões, the team's director said that, "the Le Mans 24 Hours is a very hard race, where anything can happen, and the weather conditions and the progress of the car are determining factors for the final result. It is a race that demands a lot from our team, from the drivers, to our engineers and mechanics, it requires a lot of concentration and sacrifice to reach for the first places. We don't know if it will rain during the race, but we know that the Zytek has driven well on wet tracks, which could even be an advantage for us against our competitors."
Miguel Pais do Amaral added that, "the cars from the LMP2 class are very competitive this year, on these occasions it is necessary to always have some serenity. For example, at Spa we raced in second place for most of the race, but a technical problem threw us back into seventh, but we are also ambitious and we need to step up our game, to believe that it is possible to make history at Le Mans".
