FOR MICHELIN, THE LE MANS 24 HOURS ARE ALREADY UNDER WAY !
On Sunday 3rd June, the test day for the 75th Le Mans 24 Hours will be held on the long circuit. It is the only opportunity for Michelin to test its products on this layout, which measures 13,629 kms. It is the day on which the teams will do their final set-ups and evaluate the behaviour of Michelin's latest tyres specially designed for this race.
Michelin in demand!
This year the Clermont-Ferrand tyre manufacturer will supply tyres to 26 teams (39 cars out of the 55 at the
LM P114 cars on Michelins (out of 16) - LM P27 cars on Michelins (out of 11).
LM GT111 cars on Michelins (out of 15) - LM GT27 cars on Michelins (out of 13).
Five tyre manufacturers will supply rubber for the 55 cars entered for the 75th Le Mans 24 Hours.
"We supply tyres to a large part of the field in circuit racing and endurance, and if we have a lot of partners it is because Michelin tyres are quick and the teams know that they play a key role in the battle for victory. If, in the past, it was enough just to finish endurance races to win, it's not true today. Henceforth, you have to be not only reliable but also very quick.
In endurance, performance and durability are intimately linked and the whole art consists of finding the best compromise between the two at just the right moment. Progressing is the only way to survive in racing. From one year to the next we renew almost our complete racing tyre range. If the car/tyre combination does not evolve year in year out it cannot hope to win.
For Michelin competition is a continuous form of questioning our assumptions, and this year again we will put all our skills at the disposal of our partners on the trac" says Matthieu Bonardel, Competitions manager of 4-wheel activities
It is the new appellation since 2005. The tests were successively preparatory, previous, pre-qualifying then preliminary. It is also since 2005 that the test day takes place beginning of June, after having taken place the first weekend of June since 1993.
The vital role played by tyres at Le Mans
Victory in the Le Mans 24 Hours which uses a circuit that is opened exclusively for the race and the official preliminary practice day calls for tyres that are capable of running at speeds of up to 330kph and safely sustaining average speeds of more than 215kph. Above all, they must be capable of remaining consistent for up to three or even four stints at a time, a distance of more than 500km.
Importance of the test day
Until 2004, Michelin used to profit from the traditional preliminary practice session organised six weeks upstream of the race to validate its latest tyres round the full Le Mans 24 Hours circuit and then, if necessary, fine-tune their specification in time for the race. Today, however, this practice session takes place early in June, a mere fortnight before the real thing, and the tyres for the 2007 Le Mans 24 Hours need to be made by June 11th. As a consequence, the 12 Hours of Sebring, which takes place at the end of March, now tends to serve as a full-scale dress rehearsal for Le Mans, especially as far as hot weather tyres are concerned. This year saw Michelin claim its ninth consecutive win in the American race, its second with the diesel-powered Audi R10.
