Jackie Chan compares winning Le Mans to receiving Oscar

Film star Jackie Chan says his team’s LMP2 victory and overall runner-up spot in the Le Mans 24 Hours this weekend felt “exactly like when I got an Oscar”.

The #38 Jackie Chan DC Racing Oreca led the race overall with just 70 minutes to go, when the recovering works Porsche 919 Hybrid finally overhauled it for outright honours.

But Chan's car – crewed by Ho-Pin Tung, Oliver Jarvis and Thomas Laurent – still claimed class honours, and second place outright. The team’s sister car finished fourth overall, third in class.

Team co-owner and martial arts legend Chan, 63, was bestowed with an honorary Oscar last year at the Governors Awards for his decades of work in film by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.

He wasn’t present at Le Mans this year, due to a prior engagement with his stunt performer foundation in Shanghai, but sent a live message to the celebrations after the event.

“How exciting!” said Chan. “It’s exactly like when I got an Oscar. Really, watching it on video, I’m just sorry I could not be there.

“But, anyway, no matter where you are, we win! We have to continue now, work hard for next year, and coming years and years.”
