Huge Aston Martin accident triggers fourth Safety Car

Roald Goethe suffered a nasty crash with just over seven hours remaining in the race.

A huge accident for Roald Goethe in the No.96 GTE-Am Aston Martin has caused a fourth Safety Car period at Le Mans.

Goethe appeared to lose control of the Aston Martin at the quick left hand kink at Maison Blanche and slammed in to the retaining wall. The car suffered significant front end damage and it appears the race-leading No. 19 Porsche 919 was completing a pass when the AMR driver went off.

Marshals and medical teams were on the scene immediately to tend to Goethe. "We can confirm that Roald is conscious and talking on the radio but will go to the medical centre," said the team.

The Safety Car picked up both the leader Nico Hulkenberg and second placed Rene Rast but the Audi was ahead of the Porsche effectively meaning that the Audi is now all but a lap behind the leading 919 Hybrid.

Just over seven hours of the Le Mans 24 Hours remains.
