There was frantic activity in the pit lane as many drivers made pit stops approaching the final hour of Le Mans 24 Hours. Another problem in the pits for the Team Goh Audi R8 cost a few seconds and the Graham Nash Motorsport Saleen suffered a mechanical failure.

Stefan Johansson pitted for a driver, fuel and tyre change pit stop. He handed over to Emanuele Pirro who sat stationary in the pit lane as the Champion Racing Audi R8 refused to start. The mechanics stood round the car and inserted a battery into the right-hand side inside the cockpit. The team eventually got the car going and it rejoined still in third place.

Jam Lammers was running in sixth place in his Dome Judd and lapping some six seconds per lap faster that the Courage-Judd of Jean Marc Gounon in front of him. Gounon then pitted for fuel as did Lammers immediately afterwards. They returned to the track just over one minute apart with Lammers again lapping several seconds faster.

The leading Bentley of Guy Smith successfully did a quick fuel stop and rejoined the track. The Team Goh Audi R8 of Ara also pitted for fuel and rejoined the circuit without a problem.

The Graham Nash Motorsport Saleen S7-R slowed up and coasted to a halt at Virage de Mulsanne with Pedro Chaves behind the wheel.

Guy Smith and David Brabham are driving first and second respectively for Bentley with Pirro for Champion Racing in third and Seiji Ara for Team Goh in fourth place. Fifth place was held by Gunnar Jeannette in the JML Team Panoz.
