Fantastic Start For "British" Audi Team
Audi Sport UK Team Veloqx locked out the provisional front row on the 48-car grid for the 72nd Le Mans 24 Hours (12-13 June). Allan McNish set a fastest time of 3min 34.683secs with Johnny Herbert stopping the clock at 3:34.907 in the opening four-hour qualifying sessions on Wednesday evening (1900-2100 & 2200-0000). All six drivers shared the driving duties in the two Infineon & Canon supported Veloqx Audi R8s during the two, two-hour sessions staged in very hot and sultry conditions. The final four hour time trial is staged on Thursday evening.
Audi R8 - #8
Frank Biela (D). Age: 39. Born: Neuss, Germany. Lives: Monte Carlo, Monaco:
"I only completed three laps in the first session when I stopped with a slight misfire, a small problem quickly sorted by the team. It was good for me to get in more laps later in the evening as this year I concentrate on DTM (German Touring Car Masters) so I must adjust to the Audi R8 again. The team should be happy with the outcome so far."
Pierre Kaffer (D). Age 27. Born: Bad-Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, Germany. Lives: Burgbrohl, D:
"I drove at the very start of the first session and the track was very slippery. I locked up at the first chicane, went over the kerbs and in to the gravel which damaged the front splitter. In the later session, the track had much more grip and I had a good run of 13 laps in the night time which I thoroughly enjoyed. With every lap I learn more."
Allan McNish (GB). Age: 34. Born: Dumfries, Scotland. Lives: Monte Carlo, Monaco:
"We had some issues in the opening test which restricted us to a 3:38.229secs (third fastest) but made adjustments during the interval which worked well allowing me to claim provisional pole with a 3:34.683 in the opening minutes of the second session. It was a 'comfortable' lap with no real heroics required as the Audi was working very well."
Audi R8 - #88
Jamie Davies (GB). Age 30. Born / Lives: Charlton Adam nr Yeovil, England:
"I was pleased with my early run and I was P1 for a time. In the second session, the car felt much better - my biggest drama in the darkness was lapping some of the slower cars. We've got a solid base to work on now, the car is good, we've got a good grid time in the bag, and we can now look ahead to fine-tuning our R8 for the race."
Johnny Herbert (GB). Age 39. Born: Brentwood, England. Lives: Monte Carlo, Monaco:
"I ended the first two hour time trial fastest on a 3:34.907 but was still not entirely happy with the car's handling - it was hard work to achieve. I tried to improve my time immediately after the interval but a combination of traffic and a slight gear selection problem thwarted me but in general we're very happy with tonight's performance."
Guy Smith (GB). Age 28. Born / Lives: Beverley, England:
"I did the first and last runs tonight. The combination of a slippery track and hard compound tyres made the Audi 'nervous' in my first stint. I then drove the last 35 minutes and the track obviously had much more grip. I concentrated on race set-up and getting in to a good rhythm. Everything is going according to plan."
Sam Li, Team Principal:
"A great performance by our drivers, the entire team and our Michelin colleagues. I'm obviously hoping we can remain at the front of the grid."
