Audi Teams still in third and fourth positions

During the night of the Le Mans 24 Hour race, the Audi customer teams ADT Champion Racing and Audi Sport Japan Team Goh defended third and fourth positions they already occupied during the early stages of the French endurance classic. After 16 hours, Team ADT Champion Racing's Audi R8 with Stefan Johansson, JJ Lehto and Emanuele Pirro was third just one lap behind the second placed Bentley. Audi Sport Japan Team Goh's Audi R8, driven by Seiji Ara, Jan Magnussen and Marco Werner, dropped from third to fourth position during the night.

Apart from a battery change just after 6 a.m., the Champion team's Audi R8 ran absolutely trouble free. Recording constantly fast lap times, Stefan Johansson, JJ Lehto and Emanuele Pirro stayed in touch with the two Bentley works cars. "There are eight more hours to go, many things can still happen," explained Audi driver JJ Lehto.

The night for Audi Sport Japan Team Goh's Audi R8, which held third position for a long time, has not been completely trouble free. The team had to change the right front suspension at 1:40 a.m. which cost them about three laps. Shortly before half distance at 4 a.m., Marco Werner reported a misfiring engine. The misfire was cured during two unscheduled pit-stops by changing the spark plugs and various part of the engine's peripherals. Sunday morning at 8 a.m., the "Japanese" Audi R8 was running fourth, seven laps behind the leading Bentley.

Audi Sport UK's Audi R8 retired Saturday afternoon shortly before the end of the second hour when it ran out of fuel.
