Berlin/Le Mans (rol/ot) The German sports car pilot Stefan Mücke scored a podium placing in his Aston Martin Vantage in the GTE Pro class at the 90th edition of the 24 hour race of Le Mans on Sunday (23rd of June).
But the race was clouded by the fatal accident of his Danish brand colleague Allan Simonsen of the Team Young Driver AMR right after the start of the race on Saturday afternoon (22nd of June). Stefan Mücke has been behind the wheel for the same team in the past as well.
"That is the reason why I can’t celebrate my podium placing and why I am not happy about this outcome. My sympathy and my thoughts are with the family and relatives of Allan as well as his team companions", Stefan Mücke said, who sat behind the wheel of the Aston Martin Vantage for about nine hours altogether. "It has been a hard race with changing conditions of rain and dry track that demanded a lot of all of us drivers."
So during the last half an hour, when the 31 year old has piloted the Vantage GTE very close to the leading Porsche, there has been a rain shower again. The Berlin drove into the pit to get rain tires and to have something repaired, before the Safety Car drove onto the track because of crashes and the lights turned red in the pit lane.
That way Stefan Mücke lost a lot of time. After that, the race has not been long enough to catch up to the leading Porsche duo again. "That has cost us the potential win“, Stefan Mücke said.
At the award ceremony for the GTE Pro class, Stefan Mücke walked onto the podium with a big Danish national flag together with Darren Turner and Peter Dumbreck in Allan Simonsens honour. "That has been a very emotional weekend, which I surely won’t forget too fast", the Berlin explained. The next race of the WEC is scheduled for the beginning of September Sao Paulo (Brasil).
Already on Tuesday (25th of June), the Berlin will be on his way to Japan to take part at the second season event of the GT Asia Series for the Team Craft Racing AMR from Hongkong in the Aston Martin Vantage GT3 V12 together with Frank Yu coming weekend (28th to 30th of June).
