Sharpe completes Morgan's Le Mans test
Adam Sharpe successfully completed the official test at Le Mans this weekend for the Morgan Works Race Team, the Somerset driver enjoying a trouble-free run in the Morgan Aero 8 GT race car at the famous French venue. The test, which is a mandatory requirement for all entrants of the Le Mans 24 Hours scheduled for June 12th/13th, was Sharpe's first outing in the car since finishing the Sebring 12th Hours in the USA last month. Co- drivers Neil Cunningham and Keith Ahlers also completed the test, although an accident during Ahlers' stint in the car resulted in a loss of track time while the car was speedily repaired.
"Overall it was a good weekend and we achieved what we set out to do," said Sharpe. "My aim was simply to complete the necessary laps and then work with my team mates to develop the car in the afternoon. The accident hampered us in that we were unable to do any additional running, but fortunately the team did a terrific job and now we are all looking forward to the race in June. To compete in the Le Mans 24 Hours has been an objective of mine for some years and I am delighted it's now a reality."
Sharpe is confident that the Morgan Aero 8 has a lot more performance waiting to be unlocked.
"Given that we were aiming to complete the testing reliably rather than at the fastest possible speed, we really haven't found the potential of the car at Le Mans," he admitted. "There is a lot more to come, I think, but for the Le Mans 24 Hours you need to match speed with reliability at every stage so that's our major consideration. It's the old adage that to finish first, first you have to finish so we're being careful not to trade one off against the other too much."
Now that the Le Mans test is concluded, Sharpe is looking forward to his first outing in the British GT Championship at Mondello Park on May 8th/9th when he will make his debut in the Gruppe M Tech 9 Porsche GT3.
