Victory for Canadian Xavier Coupal at Oklahoma!
Norman, Oklahoma -- March the 13th, 2005 -- The most prestigious Karting race in North America took place today at the Olkahoma Motorsport Complex, in Norman. Thirty eight drivers from around the world, were competing in a 20 lap race on a distance of 1,126 km long. Xavier Coupal started the final race in third position and in the first corner took on the second place for two more curves to get into first position within the first lap. The driver in the second position tried to pass him and lost control after climbing onto Coupal's kart and endend in the tires.
In the next lap the following driver tried to pass and also landed in the wall of tires after braking too late.
By that time, Xavier Coupal took a comfortable lead and seemed to be sailing thowards victory, but two laps before the finish line Coupal got passed and fell into second position. Fighting for victory, Coupal managed (in a Davide Fore manoeuvre World Champion) to pass the first driver in the last curve before the finish line. After Xavier passed the checkered flag, the driver in second position lost two positions for intentionnaly hiting Coupal in the rear end.
After the tech inspection, the driver that had finished third and was placed second on the podium was disqualified for an illegal engine. The entire weekend, Coupal's engine was lacking performance on the stretches but the quality of driving made the whole difference, although he was using last year's engine.
