Every racer gets his start somewhere -- finding his home at a local track. While it may not be the prettiest, the fanciest, or the fastest...it's where he got his start. Some stay here for a lifetime, others move on. In the end, everything comes full circle and he finds himself back at his home track -- whether it be he who comes back to race, his children, or even his children's children. The local tracks are the groundwork, foundation if you may, that makes this sport what it is. It gives the sport of karting it's strength, purpose, and longevity. WKA announced a few months back, the creation of the first ever Weekly Racing Series for karting, and we are proud to say, it is full speed ahead and making it's mark on the sport.

The Weekly Racing Series (WRS) recognizes local karters on the national level. The WRS allows karters to compete at their local track, not only against the racers in their class, but also with racers all over the country in a points battle to determine a National WRS Champion in both Junior and Senior Categories, for both Speedway and Sprint Divisions. Providing national recognition for a local racer is long overdue, and WKA is very excited about providing this opportunity for all the karters in the country.

"The World Karting Association is proud to launch the Weekly Racing Series. This program addresses the most important part of our organization, The Weekly Racer. Everyone starts out at the grass roots level, racing at the local track. Some drivers find their niche in that program while others move on. The Weekly Racer is what keeps our kart tracks going. WKA hopes this will help reward those racers for their ongoing support of their local track and the sport of karting." -- Randy Kugler, WKA President

The WRS will be broken into two regions for both Speedway and Sprint Divisions. It looks like it is going to be a North/South battle for the Speedway drivers and an East/West battle for the Sprinters. A complete breakdown will be forthcoming.

The WRS Awards Program is being officially announced for the first time. This is a very impressive layout of awards, especially for an inaugural event. Plans are to keep adding as the season progresses. It is important to WKA to make this program the best it possibly can be, because it is for the guy who will always support our sport.

"The WKA has a solid reputation of quality awards and total recognition of racers who perform well in a racing season. This will be no different...As the season moves forward, we will work with industry suppliers and continue to add to this awards program. It already exceeds $20,000, but WKA is committed to make the Weekly Racing Series rewarding and prestigious." -- Tony Barton, WKA Director of Program Development

Something exciting and different regarding the WRS Awards Program is the introduction of the "Joe Karter National Award". The plaques and trophies will be designed specifically for the Weekly Racing Series and will never be used for anything else. Awarding the top 10 in the nation, the top 5 in each region, and the top finishing driver at each participating track, these champions will have an award that is unique, not only in design, but in meaning.

Below is a breakdown of the WRS Awards Program, including National, Regional, and Local awards. While it is a great program as is, WKA feels it is only the beginning of what can be offered in the months, and years, ahead for the Weekly Racing Series.
