WKA's SpeedNews - 02.20.2004
Effective immediately - the Spec 100 class will now utilize the SBQ pipe and header system in the George Kugler Manufacturer's Cup Series presented by Bridgestone. The SBX (can on a stick) will no longer be used for this class in this series. The SBQ system will be provided at no charge to Spec 100 entrants -- one SBQ system per entrant for the entire series.
The purpose of utilizing the SBQ pipe and header system is to evaluate the overall noise reduction that may be obtained from the implementation of this pilot program. This is an effort to meet the noise problem "as a good neighbor" in advance.
Please contact RLV for the program details at 805.925.5461. ___________________________________________
Manufacturer's Cup West competitiors are making their way to the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas as Round # 2 of the Manufacturer's Cup West Series heads to X-Plex February 27th - 29th. Over 200 entries competed at Willow Springs for the Series' opener in January and even more are expected at X-Plex, as this newly formed series establishes itself as a premier WKA National Program.
There were many new names on the entries that WKA is not used to seeing, however, a few we did recognize from our Manufacturer's Cup Series that travels to tracks located on the eastern portion of the nation. These drivers are excited about the opportunity to compete against drivers they aren't accustomed to racing against.
New Jersey native, Paulie Harraka, 7-time WKA National Champion and WKA Triple Crown Champion, is heading to the West Coast to test his skills against the 2-Cycle West Coast competitors in Las Vegas. He had this to say about the upcoming event:
"My father and I are very excited about being able to attend the WKA Manufacturer's Cup West Series event at the X-Plex in Las Vegas. I know that Mike Manning and Tim Holden will put on a great race, but I am most happy to see that WKA is expanding the Manufacturer's Cup Series to include races throughout the country. I really look forward to the day when the Manufacturer's Cup East Champions and the Manufacturer's Cup West Champions finally meet for one true National Championship race."
There is bound to be heavy competitiveness between the East Coast and West Coast drivers -- who will prevail? This competition will make for some great racing, so if you're in the area, definitely stop by and check this event out! ___________________________________________
The upgrades to the Lowe's Motor Speedway fifth mile and infield area have continued through the winter months, with crews fighting Mother Nature and the clock to get things ready for the new season. While a few inches of snow lie on the ground just a few miles north of the Concord area, the massive work in preparation for the new season for NASCAR and WKA racing continues at a rapid pace. As of February 18th, new guardrail has been installed at the fifth mile, providing more runoff area for both the front and back straightaways. Once in place, the paving project will be underway to complete a newer version of one of the most historically popular tracks on the Speedway Pavement circuit. Crews will be paving just the areas of greatest need, not the entire course, which is still in very good shape, as evidenced by the recent Winter Heat Series for the Legends and Bandeleros.
A solid pre-entry list of the nation's best pavement racers is already being assembled for the return to Charlotte in the Rage Karts by NC Chassis Nationals. Activities for the first Ultramax Racing Chassis Speedway Pavement Series event will begin on Wednesday March 17th with parking and pre-entry pickup from 4-6pm. No trailers will be permitted to park in their pit spot after 6pm. Parking will resume Thursday at 7am with Thursday also designated as an optional practice day from 10am-4pm. The official WKA Practice Day will take place Friday from 9am-4pm, with racing activity both Saturday and Sunday. For more information, contact WKA Headquarters at (704) 455-1606.
