WKA RACERS, PAST AND PRESENT, EXCEL IN OTHER MOTORSPORTS VENTURES
While the Tony Stewart's and Sam Hornish's continue to excel in the premier arenas of motorsports, several other current and former World Karting Association racers are making their mark in various forms of racing, especially in the past two weeks. Headlining the list is Brian Vickers. The former WKA pavement racer and participant on the Hooters Pro Cup Series, drove his way to a career best second place finish in this past weekend's Goulds Pumps ITT Industries 200 for the Busch Grand National Series at the Nazareth Speedway in Pennsylvania. For Vickers, many in the sport feel it's just a matter of time before he parks the GMAC Chevy for Hendrick Motorsports in victory lane.
One of those who feels this way as well, is current BGN Points leader David Green, another part-time karting enthusiast. Green took the time to give Vickers, along with fellow BGN rookies Joey Clanton and David Stremme, a tour of the 5-turn Nazareth facility, vowing jokingly in the post race interview never to make that mistake again, especially since he finished fourth to Vicker's second.
In other action, former champ kart racer Clay Rogers recently claimed his first win of the season on the Hooters Pro Cup South Series at Concord Motorsports Park in Concord, North Carolina. This series has been a great venue for several drivers from many forms of motorsports to showcase their talents, karting included. On the North side of the Hooters Pro Cup Series, former karter, Kertus Davis has posted a couple of top ten finishes this year. North meets South later this year in the Hooters Pro Cup Challenge.
One of the best performances coming from the two week NASCAR swing through the Lowe's Motor Speedway has been that of current Horstman Gold Cup racer Chuck Gafrarar from Mooresville, North Carolina. After starting 17th in the Easy Care Vehicle Services 100 at Charlotte for the NASCAR Goody's Dash Series, Gafrarar blasted his way to a career best third place finish. Chuck never had the opportunity to test his worth against the top three finishers, with two late race cautions eventually forcing a premature checkered flag. While Gafrarar will follow the balance of the Dash season, look for Chuck to try double duty in July at the Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, Kentucky, running a Dash car, while also attempting to qualify a car for the Kodak Southeast Series, formerly known as The Hills Brothers All Pro Series.
Finally, congratulations to former dirt racer JR Foglesonger. Last month, JR recorded his first win of the season in the Virginia Sprint Series at the Potomac Speedway in Budds Creek, Maryland. The VSS is a sprint car class that runs a 305 motor. Other venues for the series are Virginia Motor Speedway, Winchester Speedway, and Eastside Speedway, all in the state of Virginia.
This is just the tip of the iceberg as far as past and current WKA talents are concerned. As the season continues, we'll keep you updated on the accomplishments of many of our foundation's stars.
WKA DIVISIONALS ROUNDING OUT THE MONTH OF MAY STRONGER THAN EVER
Weekend of May 23rd, 2003:
Great Lakes Sprint Series is hosting their second event at Circleville Raceway in Ohio. This series developed from a merger between Great Lakes and Ohio Sprint in order to become a bigger and better series with a first class level of competition. They'll be visiting tracks such as Circleville, Trane, Michiana, G & J, BeaveRun, and South Bend this season.
New York Empire State Sprint Series is at BeaveRun Motorsports Complex this weekend after their series' opener at Westhampton Speedway was cancelled due to rain. BeaveRun Motorsports Complex is also host to two WKA National events, as well as, to the Champ Car Stars of Tomorrow events.
Palmetto Speed Park is host to South Carolina Dirt Series' third race of the season. This year looks very promising for this series. We're told that attendance is expected to be up and the racing as competitive as ever.
SC Pavement Summer Series is being hosted by Anderson Motor Speedway. Rain threatened Anderson's opener, however, those who attended gave rave reviews. Drivers were coming off the tracks smiling and laughing after experiencing the great racing that this track can help produce.
King George Speedway is host to all of the Virginia Pavement Series' events. The race might be a week away, but the weatherman is already calling for rain. Will it ever stop?
Weekend of May 30th, 2003
Florida Divisional Dirt Series' next event is at Crossroads Motorplex. Crossroads has held all but one of this season's events for this series and has produced exciting race action each and every time.
Florida (Sharpes) Pavement Series is running this weekend at Sharpes Speedway. The first event was rained out, making this only their second. The rain date for the first race is schedule for July 26th.
Midwest Sprint Series is running their second event at Trane/Norway Speedway in Illinois. Midwest Sprint Series remains to be one of the premier sprint programs in the country. This event will be the perfect tune-up time for those planning to participate in stop #3 for the George Kugler Manufacturer's Cup Series presented by Bridgestone when it visits Trane Motorspeedway June 6 - 8, 2003.
Concord Motorsports Park for the NC Pavement Summer Series is about the only Series that hasn't cancelled due to rain yet this season. Let's hope their third event doesn't get hit hard with rain and is the best yet.
Virginia Dirt Karting Association Series is racing this weekend. Their first two events were held at Margarettsville and Amelia Motor Speedway, and now it is Capital City's turn.
Woodbridge Kart Club Regional Series at Summit Point Raceway has their Series' opener this weekend. Summit Point always produced some exciting race action each and every time. This year should be no different.
