TYLER THOMAS CLAIMS TOP FIVE IN STARS OF KARTING OPENER
"Fifth place result in talent filled field"
March 9, 2009 -- Looking to open the Snap-on Stars of Karting Series National championship right, Top Kart pilot Tyler Thomas would compete in the National Junior class as he looked to score the victory. Competing at the Ocala Gran Prix facility, Thomas would arrive Wednesday evening for the optional Thursday practice day.
With a fast kart for the last half of Thursday and Friday morning's unofficial sessions, Thomas was excited for qualifying as he was the only driver to dip below the 38 second barrier throughout the two practice days. With a solid chance for the pole, Thomas would set a fast lap early as he forced drivers to chase him.
Having the pole position at the half way mark of the session, Thomas was back into the pits for changes before heading back out on the track. Dropping back to fifth, Thomas turned another decent lap to advance forward one position and claim the fourth spot in qualifying and an outside second row starting position for the heat races.
With the heat races determining the starting positions for the prefinal, Thomas looked very consistent in the first two heats as he scored third and sixth place results. Currently with an inside second row starting spot, Thomas still had one more heat race to complete where trouble ensued and he would claim a disappointing 11th place finish.
Due to the inconsistency of some other drivers, Thomas secured a fifth place starting position for the prefinal and would look to advance forward for a better starting spot for the main event. At the drop of the green flag, Thomas moved into third as the inside front row had a great jump on the field. With the front four drivers all together, Thomas would claim the third position.
Looking to take the top step of the podium, Thomas got another incredible start from the inside row and moved into second immediately challenging for the lead. Taking the top spot on the back part of the race track, Thomas held the lead early as he was hounded by a quartet of other drivers. Being shuffled around, Thomas went from first to third and then back again before falling back to fourth after the half way mark. Still with a chance at the victory, Thomas battled the lead group hard as he and several of his fellow competitors banged wheels through the middle of the race. Having being slowed dramatically, Thomas lost the draft of the lead drivers and was forced to settle for a strong fifth place finish.
