TAYLOR MIINCH VICTORIOUS IN STARS OF KARTING ACTION
"Californian dominates Junior National Final"
April 27, 2009 -- Team Top Kart USA and Miinch Motorsports driver Taylor Miinch scored a solid victory this past weekend at the Snap-on Stars of Karting West division opener at the Jim Russell Infineon Raceway Karting Center in Sonoma, California. Topping the time charts throughout the weekend, Miinch put some bad luck in the heat races behind him and drove a dominant race to take the win on Sunday afternoon.
After pacing the field in the final timed practice session on Friday afternoon, Miinch would fall slightly short in qualifying as he was only able to turn the fourth quickest time in the fifteen minute qualifying session. Though that result doesn't look bad, the deadly outside starting spot throughout the heat races would give the young Californian some trouble.
After being driven over or off the racing surface on two of the three heat race starts, including one heat where he would finish the opening lap in 17th, the talented junior competitor pushed hard to secure three consistent race results and setup a good prefinal starting position. With a third and fourth in the opening two heats backed up by a win in the final heat race would see Miinch start from the outside front row for Sunday afternoon's prefinal.
Looking to capitalize on the front row spot, Miinch was once again mired in first corner trouble as several of the top runners were seen traveling through the grass. Falling down the running order, Miinch put his head down and never gave up. The P1 powered Top Kart was the fastest machine on the track and began to move forward. After passing eleven karts in the thirteen lap race, Miinch found himself claiming the sixth position but another outside row starting spot for the main event.
With the main goal of winning the race, Miinch also concentrated on getting through the first corner safe as he looked to set himself up for a win. Again, Miinch proved why he is one of the top junior pilots in the country as he circuited the challenging circuit faster than any other driver. Taking the lead early, Taylor pulled away from his competition taking his first career Junior National win by just over two seconds.
"The win really means a lot to me," explained Taylor after the race. "We have been fast at so many tracks this season but always seem to have some bad racing luck. Hopefully this is the turn around and a sign for some good things to come. It feels good to leave the first weekend of the West series with the point lead."
