Rain halts otherwise successful weekend at New Jersey

09.29.2009 -- The Dunlop Tire Road Racing Series driven by Mazda made its debut in the state of New Jersey over the weekend with the first ever national race at New Jersey Motorsports Park's Thunderbolt Raceway.

Road racers from all over the eastern half of the country traveled to the Garden State to give the Thunderbolt Raceway a try. Each racer began Friday practice on equal ground; the Woodbridge Kart Club has hosted events at New Jersey's other course, Lightning Raceway, but never at the challenging 2.25-mile, 12-turn Thunderbolt track, meaning every racer would have to work hard to learn the circuit and decipher the best gearing and chassis setup.

Little did teams know that after a full day of practice Friday they'd only get one day to vie for inaugural New Jersey national race victories and top prizes. Rainy weather, which dampened much of the South and Midwest on Saturday, entered the Mid-Atlantic region Sunday morning, which ultimately forced the cancellation of all scheduled racing Sunday afternoon.

Twenty drivers made the most of their opportunity Saturday by driving to national race wins in the eighth stop on the nine-race national tour. Courtney Atkinson was the only double winner. She drove to wins in PP Can Lite and PP Can Sprint 360 #1. Lance Fry won over his brother Brandon and father Jim in 100cc Controlled. Ethan Beasom, Bernie Lafrance and Alec Meda won the three Briggs Animal classes. Chris Tyrrel and Keith Raffa won the 125 sprint shifter races.

Derek Somers and Andrew Boyer continued their winning ways in the 2-cycle junior divisions. Al Barnes II won over a strong field in Yamaha Sportsman Medium; Kevin Learnard did the same in Spec 125 TaG 1. Chuck Gafrarar finished fourth in TaG 1 but got a win in Stock Leopard Sprint Final 1.

Over 25 karts started the largest class of the weekend, Stock Honda 1. Clark Gaynor Jr. fought them all off to gain the victory over Michael Moshenek and Brian Davies. Woodbridge Kart Club regular Keith O'Bier beat the national runners to a big win in 100cc Pipe Heavy.

B Stock had an impressive double-digit entry count. Allen Cox was the victor in the dual-engine enduro class.

Other national winners Saturday were Don Chrzan in Controlled Limited; Jermie Bolt in Formula 125; Sean Koyanagi in PP Can Heavy; Scott Clark in WKA Sprint 1 and Jeff Metter in Unlimited Final 1.

The longest WKA tour now has only one stop left to determine the 2009 national championships. The Road Racing Series will head south to Road Atlanta for the Oct. 30 -- Nov. 1 Big South Road Racing Series-hosted event. Entries are now being accepted for the Road Race Season Finale. The Crew-In-Training program is a leadership development program, targeted to returning campers ages 15-17, who are interested in preparing for future positions as Car Crew, Assistant Driving Instructors, or Camp Counselors.

"The Crew-In-Training program is a wonderful opportunity for teens who want to further develop their leadership and communication skills as well as gain experience in planning and instructing activities" shares Camp Director Diane Tyrrell. "We have a lot of really great older teens in our camper program, and many of them are looking for new challenges and learning opportunities. It's also a great way for the camp to tap into the energy and enthusiasm of motivated teens who want to take on leadership roles".

The Crew-In-Training program is a work-oriented experience. Teens in the program will learn leadership skills, time management, problem-solving and decision-making skills, youth development, activities and games, and much more. This program gives participants the opportunity to place the needs of others ahead of their own, share what they have learned, and be a role model for younger campers, as they help in the delivery of program activities.

"Participation in this type of program can lead to leadership opportunities at school, in extracurricular activities, and at future jobs", shares Tyrrell. Participants can also apply this learning to earn community service hours for graduation, honor society requirements, or college applications. "Teens will be able to apply the skills they learn to any future work or group environment".
