Speedway Pavement enters second half of season this weekend at New Castle
08.20.2009 -- While the four other WKA national touring series are already into the second half of their respected 2009 campaigns, the Rage Karts Speedway Pavement Series only has two of five National events in the record books as we enter the latter stages of the summer. Round 3 will be this weekend at the state-of-the-art New Castle Motorsports Park, the first ever Pavement Series race at the central Indiana facility's asphalt oval.
The event, tagged the Jammer Clutches Grand Nationals, will run in conjunction with the Coyote Motorsports Nationals, Round 4 of the Bully Clutches Gold Cup Series. The weekend marks the third doubleheader of WKA's 2009 season and first for these two series. Gold Cup will be competing on New Castle's sprint road course, the same track the George Kugler / Bridgestone Manufacturer's Cup Series will utilize for their Round 4 event next weekend, Aug. 28-30.
With the race being a Grand National and bonus points on the line along with the prestigious Grand National Eagles, the weekend will be a pivotal one for the Pavement racers. A number of close point battles will take center stage on Saturday and Sunday. Good results in Indiana will be important for many racers as the season hits its stretch run with fall events at BeaveRun (Pa.) Motorsports Complex and Riverhead (N.Y.) Raceway, which concludes the tour.
South Carolina's Aaron Weed leads Camden Gullie by 10 points in Briggs Sportsman 1 Lite. Chase Hawkins leads Weed by a 25-point margin in Sportsman 1 Heavy. Kyle Soper has only a five-point lead on Matthew Pappa in Sportsman 2 Lite. Brandon McGough leads the two Sportsman 1 Champ classes. Only 35 points separate him and Cole Timm in Lite.
Soper and Pappa are deadlocked at the top of the Sportsman 2 Champ Heavy tally, each with 369 points. Pennsylvania's Ryan Breithoff and New York's Patrick Robertson also are tied at the top of Jr Champ Heavy, each with 405 points. Only 10 points separate James Hayden from Chris Hammett and Hayden Newcomb in Briggs Jr Heavy. Hammett and Newcomb are tied for second.
Justin Bonsignore is 10 points ahead of AJ Roderick in Briggs Champ Heavy. Tyler Robertson is only 20 back in third. George Curtis Jr. leads Briggs Medium by 15 over Justin Fulmer, while Cullen Mumaw is 25 points ahead of Tyler Robertson in Briggs Champ Raptor.
Race haulers will be pulling into New Castle throughout Thursday and Friday. Official practice begins at 9 a.m. Friday and runs till 4 p.m. Practice will resume Saturday at 8 a.m. before a mandatory 10:30 a.m. drivers meeting, which will feature Briggs & Stratton pressure washer and generator giveaways, and qualifying at 11:15 a.m. The schedule is mostly the same on Sunday. Races will follow qualifying each day; kid karts will run at breaks.
