Rain Dampens The Action At Summit Point
05.13.2008 -- WKA road racers embarked on the historic Summit Point Raceway, nestled in the hills of West Virginia this past weekend for stop #3 of the Dunlop Tire Road Racing Series driven by Mazda.
Four hundred entries filled the pits and patiently waited out the passing storms throughout the weekend. Rain cancelled half of Friday's practice rounds and delayed the start of Saturday's racing program. However, with the cooperation of the competitors, the Woodbridge Kart Club successfully completed the day's events. Sunday started off once again under adverse conditions following overnight rains and ceased long enough to squeeze in two of the eight races scheduled for the day.
Several drivers scored double wins over the weekend despite the rains. Courtney Atkinson continued her winning streak in the junior 2-cycle sprint ranks by taking home a win in the DR Guilbeault Air Compressor Jr Sprint Lite class as well as a win in the LAD Specialties sponsored Jr Enduro Heavy class. Michael McCombs swept the sportsman divisions with wins in the Inline Label Company sponsored Yamaha Sportsman Medium class and tsracing.com's Yamaha Sportsman Heavy class. Chuck Gafrarar also claimed double wins during the weekend with wins in the Russell Karting Spec 125 TAG and Stock Leopard Sprint divisions.
With three down and five to go for the season, WKA road racers will take a month off and prepare for the Elite Karting Grand Nationals, June 13-15 at the Mid Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.
