Robert Stout finishes 2nd in Spec Racer at the Snap-On tools Stars of Karting event!
With two laps to go Robert Stout of Brownsburg, Indiana had driven his #457 Lucas Oil sponsored Motorama Kart Parts Birel from 16th place where he started, to 1st and was leading the field of 35 karts in the biggest race of his two year career!
The Snap-On Tools Stars of Karting presented by the Indy Racing League is the premier karting sanctioning body in the country with karters coming from Europe, South America and North America. If you want to run at the highest levels of karting then you run the Stars of Karting events.
It was an amazing turn around from Saturday's race when Stout had nothing but bad luck. "We were fast all weekend but just had no luck. I was up to 6th place in the prefinal Saturday and got punted.
We started the final on Saturday in 23rd and by the time it was over I had been in four wrecks destroying the nose piece and front faring, knocked the front end out of alignment along with the rear axel to the point that the water pump belt came off and I destroyed my second engine of the weekend".
Stout methodically worked his way through the stacked field and by the half way point was in 7th place. He kept picking them off one at a time and with two to go made his move for the win. "Things just went my way today. My mechanic Todd Bellew gave me a great car, my friends and former teammates from OMG introduced me to Todd one week ago and he is like a mad scientist. There's nothing that guy doesn't know about these karts, it was the first time we worked together and we just clicked. Saturday everyone ran into us and today everyone missed us. I was counting the cars ahead of me and only saw three, at that point I really thought two other guys had checked out so I did another count and I was really in 4th. After that the three guys in front all went through the last turn together and all three slowed up to keep their cars on the track. When that happened I drove by all three of them at the same time putting myself in 1st . It was a wild race everyone at this level is good, the guys in 20th are only a couple of tenths off the leaders. Everyone is hanging it out on every turn of every lap, your drifting the car, sliding the car, dipping wheels off into the grass, dodging wrecks, it's definitely an E ticket ride"!
The race was on for the win, from the start of the race there were 7 lead changes across the stripe and unfortunately for Stout there would be one more. Sodi kart factory driver Nick Freytag was able to get back around Stout with one lap to go. "He just had more top end speed than I had at the end of the straight. I could have made a bonsai move but I thought it would be smarter to work with him and create some separation from the other four drivers so one of them didn't take me out on the last lap. My plan worked as we did break away but I never had another chance to make a solid move on him and 2nd is better than a crash for 1st".
"It was an awesome day but I wish my dad was here to see it. He's worked very hard and spent a ton of money to give me this opportunity but he was covering a CORR race for SPEED Channel in California. He told me Mom was talking to him during the race but he said when I got to 3rd she started screaming so loud and high that only dog's ears can reach those decibels.
I have to thank so many people, Lucas Oil Products has been with me since day one so I'm glad I finally came through for them. Motorama Kart Parts put us on their team this year and Bill, Dean, Kevin, Tony, Jason Lee, Jamie Ferrell and the rest of the guys have been awesome as has the Birel chassis. NeWave Television Productions has been very instrumental along with Dennis (Hoot) Gibson who owns the Hot Licks Top Fuel Hydro Drag Boat team, they jumped in with some cash this year and that always helps. Torco Race Fuels has also supported our entire team for the past two years. Thanks goes out to Bill Simpson and Impact Race Products for keeping me safe and Rob Howden the Stars announcer showed me a lot of love during the race. A special thanks to OMG, Mike Otte, Steve (Bevis) Schiewer and Mike Green. Those guys introduced me to my Mechanic Todd Bellew and without him I had no chance this weekend.
TODD YOU ARE THE MAN"!!!
