TOP FIVE FOR PSL KARTING AT SEATTLE GRAND PRIX
Leesmann and Peterson represent Canadian team at Stars Western Finale
SEATTLE, WA (August 24, 2008) -- Roughly 3000 miles from their headquarters in Quebec, Canada, CRG and Maxtor importer PSL Karting had a pair of drivers on hand in the US state of Washington for the Snap-on Stars of Karting Western Division Finale at the Seattle Grand Prix. Californian Fritz Leesmann and Nevada's Jess Peterson competed on the 6/10-mile temporary circuit in the headline ICC category, running under the PSL Karting banner with trackside support from the team. Leesmann was coming off an impressive performance at the Canadian National Championships where he was crowned the Formula Senior champion, while Peterson was making his second start on the CRG/Maxter package.
With a short and tight circuit laid out in Seattle, qualifying for the ICC category saw the field separated by very little on the time charts. At the end of their 15-minute session, Leesmann and Peterson were eighth and ninth, separated by just two-thousandths of a second. Passing proved to be difficult in the three heat races that followed with the duo scoring best finishes of fifth and seventh in the third and final heat. With their point totals calculated, they would have to start eighth and ninth, respectively, for both of the Sunday main events.
Starting mid-pack, the opening corners of the first feature saw the ICC drivers bunch up and shuffle positions while trying to get out of first gear and through the opening right-hand corner complex. Leesmann eventually found himself in the sixth position to begin the 30-lap battle and would remain there until losing a spot in the closing laps to end up seventh. Peterson would only make it 17 laps after contact put him on the sidelines, classified 12th in the final tally.
While rain only threatened the group for the opening feature, rain tires were definitely needed to end the weekend during the final race of the day. Leesmann adapted to the wet surface quickly, having scored a victory at the Eastern Division opener in Florida in the rain. Holding his seventh starting position through the opening laps, the Kohilo Racing-supported driver advanced to fifth for the checkered flag after a spirited fight with four other competitors. Peterson was running inside the top-10 until a spin in turn one put him at the tail of the field and he eventually powered back to a 13th place finish.
The full PSL Karting squad will be on hand for the last Stars event of the season - the annual National Finals -- which is scheduled for October 10-12 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Nevada.
