MANDARINO BACK IN ACTION IN VEGAS
Freshened up after a packed spring, Canadian karter looks to cash-in this weekend
PRIMM, NV -- After a minor hiatus from his packed spring schedule, Canadian kart racer Lorenzo Mandarino will be back in action this weekend in Las Vegas for the running of the Snap-on Stars of Karting Desert Mini Grand Prix, which is being held at the Buffalo Bill's Resort and Casino just west of the city. This event is the third round for the drivers of the Stars of Karting Western Division program and represents the halfway point in the national championship season. Utilizing a temporary circuit laid out in the expansive parking lot of the casino resort, this event will put all the drivers, including Mandarino, on a level playing field as no one will enjoy any type of home track advantage. The 19 year-old will be running in the ICC category with KLS Racing, the Northern American importer for the Italian-made GP chassis, and will be powered by a George Barks-prepped TM 125cc engine.
Mandarino's season has been incredibly packed with racing as he is campaigning both the East and West Coast divisions of the Stars of Karting program, as well as the Italian Open Masters Championship overseas with the GP factory team. The original intent was to have the Canadian compete in both the European and World Championships as well, although those plans have been put on hold while the GP team restructures its efforts. Mandarino will likely make a handful of additional European starts, including possibly the World Championship event, during the remainder of the year to test the waters for a full-on 2007 effort. For now, he will re-focus his attention of pushing for the national championship here at home, as his ultimate aspirations will see him in open wheel formula cars in 2008.
