BRETT SMRZ CLAIMS TWO PODIUMS AT STARS OF KARTING EVENT
"Point leader across the board"
Brownsburg, Indiana - Current Stars of Karting Western Division Junior ICA (JICA) champion Brett Smrz took his second career Stars of Karting victory this past weekend at the Buffalo Bills Hotel and Casino in Primm, NV.
On Saturday, the Idaho resident moved forward in the pre-final from his eighth place qualifying position to finish in P2. Starting on the front row, Smrz battled hard with other front runners taking the lead on several occasions. With lead changes happening almost every lap, friends, family and spectators lined the fences to see what the eventual outcome would be. Smrz led at the beginning of the final circuit but was passed before the checkers to finish .074 behind the winner.
Sunday was a different day for the FirstKart.com driver as the talented youngster was out for redemption. Smrz never ran outside the top three in qualifying and the pre-final and was again battling hard for the victory. Smrz took the lead on lap two followed closely by second and third. The three front runners would remain this way till midway through the race when Smrz was passed for the lead dropping him back to second position. Smrz patiently stalked the leader waiting for his chance to strike. With two circuits remaining, Smrz took over the top spot with a great pass on the inside of turn three and drove to his second career Stars of Karting victory.
"I wasn't going to let anyone by me on the final lap today," explained Smrz on the podium. "Saturday was a little disappointing after leading almost the entire race and I wasn't going to let that happen again. I am extremely happy to leave here with two strong results and the lead in the point standings."
Brett is in good position for the national title as he outright leads the East division points and sits second in the West coast standings just three points out of the lead. Brett also leads the national point's championship heading into the second half of the season.
Brett would like to thank his tuner and father Gregg Smrz, Woltjer Racing Engines, Throttle Racing Products, On Track Promotions and everybody under the FirstKart.com tent for all their help and support. Brett would also like to thank his driving coach, Wes Phillips for overseeing the tuning of the chassis this weekend and for working with him to help him to achieve his racing goals.
