Grindell, Wilson win big in Daytona WKA Enduro Karts
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (12-28-96) -- Nathan Grindell of Carrollton, Tex., and Bobby Wilson of Oconomowoc, Wisc., each won a pair of events while defending World Karting Association (WKA) national champions Michael Cima of Turtle Creek, Pa., and Johnny Howard of Baton Rouge, La., won their respective classes Saturday in WKA Enduro World Championships road races at Daytona International Speedway. Cima won the 250cc Rotax class for shifter karts after posting the day's fastest lap, unofficially 2:02.06, an average speed of 105 mph. Howard took the B Stock event, Grindell won the 100cc Controlled and Yamaha Lite events and Wilson swept the Junior class races for Sprint 1 and 2. Ed Blair of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., a 37-year-old painting contractor who makes a living "hanging off of 20-story buildings during the week," won the WKA Sprint Heavy class using the strength of an engine built by multi-time Daytona WKA winner Tod Spaude. More than 220 entries participated in Saturday's activity. On Sunday, practice begins at 7:30 a.m. with the first of nine enduros going off at 9:40 a.m. Infield admission is $8.
