Canadian junior sensation David Ostella became a US Grand National Champion last weekend as he earned a coveted World Karting Association Eagle. One of the most storied awards in kart racing, Eagles for sprint kart racing are awarded at the Grand National round of the George Kugler Manufacturer's Cup Championship, this year contested as round number three at USA International Raceway in Shawano, Wisconsin. The win allowed Ostella to meet his goal of claiming a National title, and now he looks to add a full season championship as well.
Fourth from qualifying after nearly a month long layoff, the Maple, Ontario, teenager took third at the start and was second as the race hit the halfway mark. Taking the lead working lap five of eight, Ostella then worked over one second clear to take pole for the main event. The second start of the day didn't go according to plan as David fell to third, yet he reclaimed second before the lap was out and set to closing the gap to the leader. It didn't take long, and after setting his quickest lap of the race on nine, Ostella took the lead on ten and never looked back in snaring his Eagle.
The win also moved the young Canadian to 637 points through three of five rounds, an even 100 up on Sean Rayhall and 160 clear of third-placed Michael Furfari. The WKA Manufacturer's Cup Series resumes July 20th in Pennsylvania, but Ostella will be very busy in between with a Stars of Karting National Championship round and this weekend's Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship Barrie Grand Prix.
Ostella hits the waterfront this weekend as the defending race and class champion in F1-K Junior, and the current point leader in Rotax Junior after sweeping both the first and second rounds of the six-race championship. In a change of format, both classes will qualify and race prefinals Saturday before main events on Sunday.
