Tony Kart driver takes podium in first visit to Ontario
GOODWOOD, ONTARIO SH Karting Rotax Max driver Devin Cunningham was on the podium for the second time in two weeks. This time it was at the Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship presented by Toronto Star Wheels 2005 season opener at Goodwood Kartways in Stouffville, Ontario. "This is a tough, bumpy track," Cunningham said after practice. "It will take a little getting used to, but we'll get there."
After running in the top seven in practice, Cunningham stepped it up for qualifying and put his Tony Kart on the front row, just missing the pole by .112 of a second. "The SH Karting team did a good job with changes to the Tony Kart, and I am getting more familiar with the track," Cunningham said after qualifying.
At the start of the 30 lap race, Cunningham slotted into second and bided his time, waiting for an opportunity. "It was a really long race, and I wasn't sure of the race pace, so I stayed second and waited. I was really saving my tires so I would be in good shape for the end of the race."
Cunningham lost second to an outbraking move that forced him wide, and on the run to the next corner he was moved back to fourth. "It was a bit disappointing," Cunningham said. "But I knew I had the speed to move back up and the time to do it."
Cunningham quickly recovered from a 10 kart length deficit and reeled in the third place driver. "The leaders were getting away, so I had to get by," Cunningham said. On his passing attempt, there was contact, and even though Cunningham was able to recover, he lost enough ground that he couldn't make it up before the finish. "The other guy was quite mad, but I think it was a racing incident. I had the inside, and there was side-to-side contact." With a huge gap to make up, Cunningham settled into third and came home with a podium finish. "We were better than third today, but we'll take this," Cunningham said. "It is tough to come to these new tracks, with a new team, but I think we did well, and I'm looking forward to the second round in two weeks time."
