Clean sweep for Morad in SRFKC opener
Daniel Morad takes pole, pre-final and final win at Goodwood
GOODWOOD, ONTARIO - Markham Ontario's Daniel Morad had a stellar weekend for his first 'home' race of the year. Morad had already competed in several events south of the boarder, but with the season opening event of the Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship presented by Toronto Star Wheels at Goodwood, it was time to drive in front of a home crowd - on home soil.
Morad faired well in the Friday practice day and that was a sign of things to come. "Our Maple Leaf Mortgages Birel was good today. It is good to race back at home for the first time this year - I'm ready," the Markham youngster said. In Qualifying for Formula Junior, Morad took the pole by .383 of a second over Michael Vincec. "I was a little worried about the weather. It kept raining on and off, so we had to choose our tires carefully."
At the start of the raining pre-final, Morad was slow to get away and he slotted into second. Patiently he waited for his spot to pass and then he took the lead. From there it was just a question of managing his rain tires until the end. Morad won by just over a second. "It was okay. The rain here makes it tough and the track was drying fast. I had to be careful so I could start up front in the final."
In the final, it was a dominant flag-to-flag win for the 14-year-old. With a dry track, the Maple Leaf Mortgages Birel showed its true speed. "It was really, really good in the final. Paul Lapierre hit the setup just right and it was great for the full 25 lap distance."
Morad now just has a few days off before heading to Beaverun, PA for the first race of the Snap-on Stars Series. "Hopefully we will be as good there as we were here," Morad said.
