GOODWOOD, ONTARIO The opening round of the Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship presented by Toronto Star Wheels got off to a good start for Cameron Motorsports, as Maxime Pelletier powered his Cameron Motorsports/MMG Financial CRG to a dominant win in Formula Junior, the first race of the weekend.
"I just want to pace myself and then push at the end," Pelletier said before the race. He did pace himself, but there was no need to push at the end.
Kyle Marcelli moved up from fourth on the grid to finish third, and he tried a last lap pass for second, but it was not to be. A first and third in the first race of the weekend was a good start.
In RotaxMax Junior, Mike Vincec took home a dominant victory for his Cameron Motorsports/MMG Financial CRG team, and Formula Junior winner Pelletier rounded out the podium in third.
In the headline class, Formula Senior on Sunday. Cameron lead Senior driver Robert Wickens started the Formula Senior race from the front row after just being nipped for the pole by one-tenth of a second.
Wickens took the lead on lap six and held it for most of the race before having to settle for second. "I think I could have had him, the leader, with a lap to go, but I made a little mistake and that was that. The CRG was really good today, and with a race this long, we really learned a lot about this chassis and engine combo. We also got our Cameron Motorsports/MMG Financial team a good start to the points championship, so, overall I am happy with our day," Wickens said.
Rounding out the weekend was Marco Di Leo, who took home the win in Rotax Max Senior after making and exciting pass for the lead. "I'm happy with the CRG, it works well."
The final award for Cameron Motorsports was the Pratt & Miller Team Spirit award which goes to the team that exhibits the highest levels of teamwork in the areas of presentation, preparation and results. "It is great to take home this award it ends a perfect weekend for us," Bob Cameron said.
Team owner Bob Cameron was happy with all his team's performance on the opening weekend of the Sunoco Series. "I know we have all the right parts to win," Cameron said. "We have the CRG chassis, which is proven to be very good. We have good motors, tuners and drivers, and that shows in our results this weekend."
