The Willis Brothers / CRG Race Team had an off weekend from the regular SKUSA Great Lakes Region schedule allowing 80 Junior driver, Matt Melster, to enter the Indianhead Regional at Dousman Wisconsin. This was a joint event with Badger Kart Club's regular weekly events with 5 classes open for competitors from the SKUSA organization.
Badger Kart Club will be hosting the upcoming World Karting Association (WKA) Grand National Manufacturers Cup event August 17-19. The opportunity to run at Badger prior to this National event is a great chance to find the little extra that will be needed to have a top finish in August. The track repaving last year has held up well and the facilities at Badger are top notch.
With the Dousman track only 20 minutes from the Melster Team base, it was a very short trip to the track for a change. Saturday was open practice with Sunday being set as 2 laps of qualifying, a 10 lap heat race and 15 lap feature.
The CRG Demon with the new Pro Fab/Wiegand power plant was fast for Saturday practice and getting faster every time out. The weather for Sunday was predicted to be about the same so the possibility of good results was strong.
Nine 80 Junior drivers were entered in the SKUSA Regional portion of the event. Matt Melster would be the first kart out to qualify in the class and immediately put up the fastest qualifying lap. This gave Matt pole position for the 10 lap heat race. With a great start in the heat, Matt went on to a big lead and ultimately a heat race victory. He would start the feature from the pole and again jump out to a huge lead early on. Matt went on to win by almost half a lap while setting the fastest race lap time 4 laps in a row. Another clean sweep of fast qualifier, fastest race lap and the heat and feature wins.
One more solo run at Badger by Matt Melster is expected at the WKA sanctioned Midwest Sprint Series regional event on Sunday August 4th. This will be the final tune-up before the Grand Nationals.
The Willis Brothers/CRG Team will be at the World Karting Association Grand National event at Dousman Wisconsin on August 17-19. WBR/CRG will have only 2 drivers for this event- James Willis in the 125 Shifter National class and Matt Melster in the 80cc Junior class.
