Californian jumps up to Senior level with two victories while preparing for trip to World Cup in Italy
FONTANA, CA (August 29, 2009) -- Just three weeks after scoring two victories in his Championship Karting International debut, American karting star Gustavo Menezes returned to the CalSpeed Karting facility outside the Auto Club Speedway for the season finale of the ProKart Challenge South program. The event was used as a warm-up for the upcoming SKUSA SuperNationals in November along with CIK-FIA World Cup event in Sarno, Italy. Competing at the Senior level, Menezes earned feature wins in the TaG Senior and KF2 divisions.
The Tony Kart machine Menezes was piloting in the TaG Senior division experienced a mechanical issue, forcing the 14-year old to pull off before posting a strong fast lap. This put him into the seventh slot on the grid for the opening heat race. With consistent laps, Menezes worked himself up to second in the 10-lap event. The following heat would see Gustavo lead the final nine laps to score the win and the pole position for the feature race. The 20-lap feature put Menezes up against another rising competitor from the Southern California area. The two swapped the lead position numerous times until his rival retired early. That allowed Menezes to take the victory unchallenged.

Menezes earned the top qualifier honors and was engaged in a tight battle in the opening heat, finishing third until tech officials found his rear tire width too wide, giving him a disqualification. The slight error was something would overcome quickly in the second heat as he drove from tail of the field to second in 10 laps. The KF2 feature would again see Menezes battling for the lead, this time against a former multi-time national champion. As the two continued fighting it out for the win, the two went side by side into the first corner of the track. Unfortunately, contact was made and the other competitor got the worse as a results. Menezes kart suffered a slightly bent axle however he would manage to bring home his ride to the checkered flag in first.
Menezes will now board a plane bound for Italy for the CIK-FIA KF3 World Cup event in Sarno, Italy on September 3-6.
