SCHUBERT STEALS VICTORY AT mAUI KART CHALLENGE
Driver earns first Superkarts! USA Hawaii region victory while Gumpfer, Zacagnini, and Frate add wins
KAHULUI, HAWAII (October 11, 2008) -- The Maui Kart Challenge continued its inaugural season with the fifth round of the schedule taking place on October 11 under the lights at the Maui Motorsports Park Puunene Kart Track. The new Superkarts! USA Hawaii Region is enjoying its first season under the organization's banner, as is continuing to bring karting to the forefront of the motorsports enthusiasts on the Hawaiian Islands.
Six drivers took on the Maui circuit in the TaG Senior category, with a seventh joining the field for the final. Troy Goldberg led the way in qualifying with a 36.439-second lap time. Andres Frate was second in the session, just a few tenths off the pace while George Jones recorded the third fastest time. In the opening heat race, Frate did not record a lap on the scoring system due to an issue with his transponder, however, he did indeed finish second behind Goldberg. They repeated the finishing order in the second heat race with Jim Schubert running third in both races as well.
Goldberg and Frate led the way in the 18-lap main event. Trying to get by Goldberg, Frate was eventually sent off-course and fell back to fourth. On Lap 12, Goldberg would surrender the lead when the power valve stuck on his Rotax, allowing Schubert to assume the position. Unchallenged at that point, Schubert would go on to cruise to the victory, his first his SKUSA competition. Frate was able to nip Jones for the second spot in the closing stages of the race, while Goldberg fell to fourth.
Alec Gumpfer led the shifter group in his S5 entry, preparing for the upcoming SKUSA SuperNationals in November in Las Vegas, Nevada. Gumpfer was the top qualifier in the combined S3 / S5 / K1 group and took the overall victories in both of the heat races and the main event, as well. Tom Zacagnini challenged Gumpfer for the overall victory while taking top honors in all of the S3 on-track sessions. Hugh England ran second to Zacagnini while Steve Eggers completed the top-three.
The K1 category had four drivers battling into the night, led in qualifying by Andres Frate. Tim Eback was second with Gordon Reis and Jessie Nielson completing the field. Frate would win both heat races with Nielson and Eback splitting the runner-up position. To complete the sweep, Frate would take the victory in the main event while Reis took his turn in the second spot. Eback finished third as Nielson retired on lap 10.
A local club option class of Senior Sportsman joined the event with 10 karts turning out for the night race. Les Shibuya won the feature race with Tim Hultquist and Robert Christensen completing the podium.
Round six will take place on November 8 and will be the penultimate event on the schedule, with the season finale set for the Hawaiian State Championship weekend on December 12-14.
