SHARKEY CLAIMS THREE PODIUMS IN WKA ACTION
"Second place results in three of four classes entered for Sharkey"

May 4, 2010 -- Team FMS driver Shawn Sharkey scored three podium results at the second round of the World Karting Association Manufacturer's Cup program in South Bend, Indiana. Competing at the Michiana Raceway Park this past weekend, the Merlin Racing chassis driver vhad one of his best national race weekends as he battled with some of the best junior drivers across the country and held his own at the front of the field.

Sharkey would compete in two classes in Saturday's racing action as he would contest in the Komet Junior Heavy and Yamaha Junior Lite divisions. Both fields would boast more than forty competitors including multi-time champions and national race winners as well as fast rookies. First on the docket was the Komet Junior Heavy class where Sharkey would qualify in the fourth position in the timed three lap session. Looking to move forward in the prefinal, Sharkey would fall victim to an outside row starting spot and drop just outside the top five. Utilizing his experience and testing from the week prior, the New Jersey resident turned some of the quickest laps of the event as he progressed forward to finish fourth.

Sharkey would not be denied a better result in the final as he quickly began his march towards the front. After exiting the first corner in the fourth position, Sharkey quickly moved into the third spot and began to hunt down the lead duo that had opened a slight advantage. Looking for his first national win, Sharkey was able to move to the second position but would run out of time to mount a charge on the leader as he would settle for the bridesmaid podium spot.

Sharkey would have a little tougher fight in the Yamaha Junior Lite class as a seventh place qualifying effort would see the Team FMS driver line up inside row four for the prefinal. Looking like a seasoned veteran, Sharkey quickly moved forward to the third position before the checkered flag flew in the prefinal. Fireworks would come at the drop of the green flag for the main event as Sharkey was able to avoid contact and move into the second position. Though unable to keep pace with the leader, Sharkey battled hard with fellow competitors all race long to score his second podium result of the day.

Sunday would be a new day and new classes for the junior drivers as Komet Junior Lite and Yamaha Junior Heavy classes would see action. Looking to improve on Saturday's double podium day, Sharkey started out on the right foot as he qualified fourth in the Komet division and would hold steady in the prefinal for an outside second row starting spot. In the main event, Sharkey and the outside pole sitter would get a jump on the field as they quickly went from second and fourth to first and second on the exit of the first corner. Though Sharkey would lead at one point, he was unable to hold off the advances of another competitor and would fall to second before halfway. The two leaders would run nose to tail for the remainder of the race but again, Sharkey would be the runner up.

The Yamaha Junior Heavy class was Sharkey's toughest class on the weekend as a poor qualifying effort would see the youngster wind up turning only the ninth quickest time. Looking to improve throughout the day, the talented junior would be involved in some opening lap incidents as he would claim the 13th place spot in the prefinal and would battle hard in the main event to finish 14th.

"This was by far the best racing weekend that I have had at the Manufacturer's Cup," expressed Shawn Sharkey after the racing weekend. "I thought we were going to be able to get our first win of 2010 today but to come home with three podium results is outstanding. I am looking forward to the next event in a few months time."
