PHIL DE LA O SHOWS WET WEATHER SKILLS AT US ROTAX FINALS
"Arizona pilot will travel to Italy"
Phoenix, Arizona -- September 17, 2008 -- Recent Junior Intercontinental A (JICA) championship winner Phil De La O scored an impressive fourth place result at this past weekend's Rotax Max Challenge USA Grand Nationals held at USA International Raceway (USAIR) in Shawano, Wisconsin. The junior pilot used the event as a tune-up for the Rotax Max Challenge World Finals that will take place at the La Conca International Circuit in Muro, Leccese, Italy in late November.
Phil De La O opened the event by turning some very quick times through Wednesday's official timed sessions and backed those up in Thursday qualifying as he claimed the second overall position. Turning a lap time of 59.998, the Arizona pilot was only one of two junior drivers to break the one minute barrier.
With the second place qualifying result, De La O had guaranteed himself a front row starting position for all three heat races. With the results from these setting up the prefinal starting order, De La O worked hard with his team and tuner to ensure success. The talented junior pilot drove to perfection as he dominated and claimed all three of his heat race wins and the pole position for the prefinal.
Saturday morning would provide rain to the junior competitors. Looking to maintain his pole position for the prefinal, De La O took the lead early but drifted wide on the exit of corner three. With a host of 36 fierce competitors behind him, De La O lost a few positions before getting his momentum back. The talented junior began to work his way back forward and claimed the sixth position and an outside row three starting position for the final. Showing his true grit and determination, De La O did not give up and battled hard for each and every on track position.
With conditions not improving for the final, the recent Stars of Karting divisional champion would take the opportunity to prepare for his trip to Italy, by running fast and consistent race laps as he began to work forward. Chasing down the drivers in front of him, De La O worked on race lines and braking as he advanced forward to finish fourth in the main event.
"This was a tune up weekend for me even though we came here to win. It was a good week for De La O Motorsports," explained De La O after the final. Doing well in the Florida Winter Tour and getting the first spot in the Rotax Max Challenge was a great feeling. I'm looking forward to the opportunity of racing against some of the best drivers in the world at La Conca in November.
Phil would like to thank his sponsors and supporters for a successful year to date: Red Bull and Northwest Floor and Wall. A special thank you continues to go out to Tony Kart, Ariel Castrol and High-Rev Engines for their continued support through the 2008 racing season.
