Heartache for Corbett in KartStars
21 July, 2003 - Following a successful run throughout 2002 South Australian driver Reif Corbett is beginning to think all of his luck may have run out.
After two disappointing rounds in the Ford KartStars Series Corbett was looking forward to a good result at Willowbank Karting Raceway in Queensland and throughout the round he was one of the pace setters.
The INXS Panasonic driver set the fourth fastest time during qualifying but was handed a 0.06 second penalty after an incident during the opening session.
Throughout the heat races Corbett was in the thick of the action throughout the heat races recording two second places finishes and a seventh.
The 24-year-old was engaged in a titanic battle with Championship leader Andrew Thompson, Troy Woolston, Luke Wood and Josh Arandt during the Pre-Final where he eventually crossed the line in fourth to start the 20-lap final from the outside second row.
"That was a great battle which now gives me some good confidence entering the final knowing that I can match the pace of the front runners," said Corbett after the Pre-Final.
At the start of the final Corbett slotted into second place behind Woolston. Within a handful of laps the multiple State Champion found his way to lead the way.
But his time at the front was short lived when Thompson relegated both Woolston and Corbett back a spot. Corbett then began to be tangled in a battle for second it allowed the race leader to slowly open a gap.
Shortly after Corbett began to come under pressure for the third spot from current Australian Champion, Josh Arandt allowing Woolston and Thompson to tighten their hold on the round.
Corbett dropped to fourth and was two kart lengths behind third placed Arandt as they crossed the stripe to start the last lap. With half a lap remaining disaster struck for Corbett dropping a chain bringing him to a halt and out of the event.
"I just don't know what I have to do. So close but so far is all I can say," lamented Corbett. "Now I have to try and gain some exceptional results over the remaining two rounds. Which I am confident of achieving."
The next round of the Ford KartStars Series will be held at the New South Wales Oran Park circuit on August 9th and 10th.
