ST. Johns, Pa. . . . . . . . With a weather forecast calling for rain all weekend and most tracks in the northeast either canceled or postponed, the races went on Pocono Mountain Speedway both Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. Crews worked hard all morning on Sunday, battling drizzle and a wet track, but the Summer Heat Racing Series kicked off the beginning of the season. Action was fast paced in the Briggs Light class. With plenty of drafting and the passing room on the track, the fans were treated to 16 lead changes during the 12-lap feature. Steve McCracken came out on top in a photo finish at the line. Randy West starting at the end of the field in the feature didn't have an easy win. West had to battle his way through traffic to take the win in the 250 cc Microsprint race, proving micro's aren't only for dirt. Traveling racing club A.M.S.R.A. (American Micro Stock Racing Association) were in town for their first of many stops at Pocono Mountain Speedway along with the slingshots proving that this is a very versatile track for all types of cars and exciting racing. Foam blocks were in place for the driver's protection, but were not needed with the only cautions caused by mechanical failure, which only added to the great racing action. The Summer Heat Racing Series continues next Sunday afternoon with all kart classes, microsprints and the slingshots.
