LEESMANN AND SMITH SCORE PKC NORTH TITLES WITH ALUMINOS
Smith celebrates championship with six-straight win while Leesmann hangs on in finale
SONOMA, CA (September 16, 2010) - The 2010 season has been a very successful run for the Team Aluminos squad and its drivers. Performance on track has shined from January until now with solid off-track preparation and on-track training sessions by the experienced and talented Aluminos staff. With that, the results have spoken with two ProKart Challenge North championships added to the trophy case after the sixth round of the program on September 3 at the Jim Russell International Karting Center. Jeff Smith continued his winning streak and scored again in the S4 division while Fritz Leesmann clinched the title in the headline S1 category.
Smith's 2010 season has been like no other seen in recent years in karting. The growing and popular S4 Master Stock Moto category has established itself as the largest and most competitive division for the elder karters. The Aluminos driver came off a championship season in '09, as he campaigned the PKC South series. Scoring the final two main event victories, Smith clinched the title. Come 2010, Smith has extended his win streak by adding six more, including another event sweep at the PKC North finale. Smith cleared the field by three-tenths in qualifying, posting a 49.375. Smith was challenged early on in the first heat, but came back to score the win and then lead all eight laps in the second heat. The main event was all Smith, showing the way another 20 circuits to score the victory by 12-seconds. Smith ran the fastest lap of the race, just four-tenths off his qualifying time which showed the consistency of Smith behind the wheel and the Aluminos package he piloted throughout the day.
Coming into the event with a healthy championship lead, Leesmann looked for the early kill come the Pro Stock Moto qualifying session. His 47.981 was best in the timed run to position Leesmann P1 on the grid for the opening heat. Leesmann continued to show the way through the two heat races, leading all eight laps of both motos. The main event looked to be the Leesmann show once again as he made his bid for his second victory of the season. Leading the way up until lap 15, Leesmann's carburetor worked itself loose and the engine lost power to end his race. Classified sixth in the final tally and setting fast lap of the race, Leesmann had gained enough points on the day to outscore his championship challengers to clinch his first PKC championship.
In addition to Smith's victory, two other drivers stood on the podium for Team Aluminos. Peter Workum completed his season in TaG Master with a runner-up finish, his third of the season to put him third in the series standings. Workum backed that up with a fourth place performance in the S4 category. Todd Wilson made his third start in the PKC North S3 Novice Stock Moto class. Continuing to make improvements each weekend working with the Aluminos crew, Wilson ran to second on the day while running at a much-improved pace on-track.
TaG Senior driver Larry Fraser carried the Team Aluminos colors on the season and came away with the vice-champion honor following the finale. Sitting second after qualifying and the first heat race to his championship rival, Fraser worked his way to the front but was short-lived with another competitor making accidental contact with the veteran driver to put him on the sidelines. Coming from 11th, Fraser would go on to finish seventh in the main event with the fast lap of the race - 50.620. Brad Dunford matched his best PKC North result on the season, placing fifth on the day. After a slow start in qualifying, Dunford progressed as the event moved on and found himself into the top-five when the final checkered flag waved.
