Atkinson, Gafrarar, Myers race to 3 wins at Road America
07.15.2010 - National series regulars Courtney Atkinson, Chuck Gafrarar and Adam Myers led all WKA Dunlop Tire Road Racing Series driven by Mazda drivers at Road America last weekend with three wins each at the highly anticipated Zoom Zoom Nationals.
Atkinson, a Wisconsin native, earned victories in PP Can Lite, PP Can Sprint 360 #1 and Yamaha Sportsman Medium. Atkinson's trio of wins at Road America continued the 2008 WKA Triple Crown champion's success in her second season racing in the senior ranks. Atkinson now has seven national wins on the 2010 Road Racing tour.
Gafrarar's three Zoom Zoom Nationals wins give him 14 victories on the season to lead all Road Racing Series competitors. In fact, Gafrarar's total win count is by far the most of any WKA national racer this season.
Chuck G garnered wins in three of the largest classes of the weekend, TaG 2, Stock Leopard Final 1 and Final 2. Both TaG features started over 20 karts. Wisconsin's Aaron Telitz was the only racer to beat Gafrarar at Road America. Telitz got the win in Saturday's TaG 1 main over Aaron Jones; Gafrarar finished fifth.
Western New York driver Adam Myers bested Atkinson in Sunday's PP Can Sprint 360 #2, and added two more wins to his weekend total with a sweep of the WKA Sprint divisions. Myers, who is in the midst of his best season as a senior Road Racing competitor, won WKA Sprint 1 over Jerry Revely in a close affair. Myers now has 10 wins on the 2010 Road Racing circuit.
Six racers drove to a pair of wins at the fast four-mile Road America road course. Veteran Randy Fulks extended his points lead 100cc Controlled Spec #1 with a win over his brother, Rick Fulks. Randy returned Sunday to drive to victory in Formula 100 #2.
Justin Taylor continued his reign over the 100cc Pipe ranks, sweeping the category at Road America. Taylor won Pipe Medium over Barry Taft while Carl Lankenau took second in Pipe Heavy.
Minnesota's Nevin Nelson swept the CIK 125 Shifter classes. Nelson denied Telitz of a triple-win weekend. Telitz finished second to Nelson in both CIK 125 Shifter 1 and 2.
Michael Ryan Arnold was the only entrant in Jr Sprint Lite and Heavy, thus getting both victories. Arnold's Road America wins followed up his Jr Sprint Lite win last month at Mid-Ohio. Arnold's Mid-Ohio triumph marked the first time all season that Derek Somers had been beat in Jr Sprint. Somers did not make the trip to Road America.
Brian Wilhelm raced his first Road Racing national since picking up three wins at the Daytona opener in December. Wilhelm added two more victories to his 2010 total to remain unbeaten on the season. The Arkansas shoe drove his 125cc-powered laydown to wins in both Unlimited finals. Formula 125, the third class Wilhelm won at Daytona, was included in the last race Saturday, but it was canceled due to rain, denying Wilhelm at a shot at another triple-win weekend.
Brian Duensing won both WKA 125 Shifter mains. Duensing picked up the WKA 125 Shifter 1 win over John Pickens; Chad Donner finished runner-up to Duensing in WKA 125 Shifter 2.
Four drivers won a pair of local option races. Mike Stroik got the Friday night win in the Briggs Charity Race, which benefited the Badger Kart Club scholarship fund. Stroik added a second win in Briggs Limited Mod Heavy 2.
Eric Schumacher ran strong in the national TaG classes, taking a pair of third-place finishes. Schumacher did win two local options, sweeping the TaG Heavy mains over Jim Russell Jr. and Aaron Snyder.
Paul Behnke won both HPV Sr Sprint mains over Scott Gazillo, who set the fast time in both 30-minute affairs. Todd King won Briggs LO206 360 and 385 over Doug Dodge.
Single national winners at Road America included Milo Schoonover in 100cc Controlled, Scott Grenier in 100cc Controlled Spec 2, Tom Smith in Briggs Jr Sprint Lite and Adam Ross in Briggs Jr Sprint Heavy.
The competitive Briggs Animal mains were split three ways. Jon Evans won Briggs Animal 335 over Nick Knauz. Regan Vehring continued momentum from his Mid-Ohio success with a big win over fellow Wisconsin driver Stroik in Briggs Animal 360. Scott Evans drove to victory over Matthew McDonald in Briggs Animal 385.
Charles Fox bested Atkinson in PP Can Medium while Wilshire Walkup made the long haul to Wisconsin from Florida to win PP Can Heavy. Adrian Dale got the win in Spec 125 TaG 1. Ryan O'Connell and Noah Stark split the Stock Honda mains. John Crist was the lone entrant in Yamaha Sportsman Heavy.
Single local option class winners were Charles Wilbur, Amanda Tyler, Lawrence Palmer, Joseph Vilece and Frank Vilece.
