Spring Run, PA_ A host of veteran winners filled Victory Lane Saturday at the Path Valley Speedway Park's Burris Karting afternoon.
One newcomer was Mike Crowe of Cumberland MD who won ahead of a big field of veterans in the Junior Stock division. "I love Path Valley and the smooth, steep banks," he said, "and I'm here to practice and get ready for the PDKS race that's coming up next month."
The Maryland youngster was referring to the Pennsylvania Dirt Karters Series State Championship race Path Valley will host May 15 and 16. In past years 300 and more of the top riders from Pennsylvania and all adjoining states have participated in individual races in the series, which was jointly sanctioned by the WKA and BNSS.
"Path Valley's regular drivers are tough enough, but the state championship series brings in the best from all areas and we want to race against them," Crowe said. "Most kart tracks are half this size and it's just great to open the engine up and go as fast as it can."
Dicing and dancing wheel to wheel, the season long rivalry on four wheelers between Cory Buhrman of Upper Strasburg, Dane Delancey of Port Royal and Craig Robinson of Fort Loudon took a new twist Saturday as Robinson beat Delancey a few feet on the 2-Stroke Four-Wheelers and Buhrman beat Delancey by about two lengths on the 4-Stroke quads.
The four wheelers race every Saturday at Path Valley with the karts, and they also race in the AMA motorcycle flattrack events. The Saturday before, Delancey had won all three evening District 6 AMA races including both classes and the Sportsman feature. "He wobbled on the start," Robinson said.
The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north on PA Route 641 from the intersection with PA Route 75, halfway between Port Royal and Hagerstown. It is five miles east from the Willow Hill Exit 14 of the PA Turnpike. The new phone number at the track is 717-349-7111.
