ICA Quebec 3rd round: Kevin Lacroix : a comeback victory
St-Eustache, July 14th 2003. -- Competition is always as fierce in the world of karting and racers have to earn every bit of tarmac: ICA class is no different. The fourth round of the Quebec karting championship was held in Grand-Mère on the 1,2 kilometer (0,745 mile) facility just north of Trois-Rivières. Kevin Lacroix's weekend had highs and lows : first, he got another pole position in the qualifying session, then he became a spectator when his machine was caught in an accident in the prefinal and he fought back to win the final race in convincing manner. Therefore, he increased his lead in the ICA championship to a point where he needs only one more point on the last weekend to clinch the title.
Weather was the main concern before the qualifying session: some corners were wet, there were puddles but skies were clearing. PSL Karting decided to go for slick tires but a different setup. That was enough for Kevin to take the pole by more than 0,6 second over second place Francois Paquette.
" We didn't know what to expect on the track since the weather was changing every half hour, said Kevin. You take the wrong decision and you spoil you session. Slick tires on a wet track and you wind up kart-crossing ! Rain tires on a dry track and you're down by two seconds. But the PSL Racing crew did the right thing and I kept the machine on the road."
At the start of the prefinal, they all dragged to the first corner and three machines went dancing in the grass as they piled on one another : Kevin, Joseph Genest and Maxime Longtin suddenly became spectators. This was the first time Kevin was sidelined this season with an off-road .
Come from behind victory
Kevin had to start from the last place in the final but nevertheless reeled in all the competitors and cruised on to an easy come from behind victory with a two-second lead over Robert Foteas. Leading the ICA class with a comfortable margin by 45 points (151 to 106) over Foteas, Kevin has to score only one more point to earn the season title. The last round is set for Grand-Mère again at the end of August.
Stars of Tomorrow : third round in Illinois
Kevin will try to get his first victory in the Stars of Tomorrow series when he and PSL Racing team head out to Trane Motor Speedway in Illinois on August 2nd and 3rd. Two weeks later, he will be in Mosport where the Canadian Karting Championships will be held on August 16 and 17.
