KartStars set to shine under lights
16 July, 2003 - The Ford KartStars this weekend will light up the Willowbank Karting Raceway in Ipswich with the third round of the Series all set to be a sensational event.
With the V8 Supercar round being held at the adjacent Queensland Raceway it is the perfect opportunity for the KartStars to shine in front of the Ford V8 Supercar teams many of whom will be on hand to witness the Final on Saturday night.
After a win and a second place in the opening two rounds 15-year-old sensation, Andrew Thompson will enter this weekend's event as one of the favourites given his success in the past at the circuit.
"I won the Junior Sportsman class at this round last year and the track is the closest thing that I have to a home circuit so I am confident, although I have never driven a Rotax kart there," said Thompson.
The Byron Bay driver continued to say "I'm confident but it is the Championship I am after so points is what I am really chasing, not just another round win."
But Thompson will not have it all his own way if the previous rounds are anything to go by with the 32 drivers very evenly matched.
Currently second in the Series Jason Varley will display Super Cheap Auto livery this weekend and along with the experienced Ben Savage, hard charging Adrian "Hollywood" Estasy, CC Racing pair, Josh Arandt and Troy Woolsten and Super Align driver, Nick Parker will take the challenge to Thompson.
Queenslander John Martin is another driver who has showed a great turn of speed of late taking pole last round and could well be a driver to beat this weekend "I showed some good pace at the last round matching times with the leaders in the final but when the water pipe burst the temperature went sky high and I lost a lot of power," commented Martin.
Such is the importance of ensuring you stay at the front of the pack Martin has engaged the services of last year's Series third placed runner Ipswich's own Scott Auld as his mentor and mechanic for this year's assault.
Martin went on to say "Scott's local knowledge added to the fact that Ipswich is one of my favourite tracks put me in a good position to battle for the win this weekend."
This round is really the make or break for some drivers who have had some problems in the previous rounds including Taz Douglas, Reif Corbett and Wesley May.
Supporting the Ford KartStars Series will be the third round of Australia's most rewarding junior karting Series, the Super Cheap Auto Junior Blitz Series.
Practice begins on Friday with Qualifying from 11:30am on Saturday and the finals set to begin with the Super Cheap Auto Junior Blitz Series from 5:30pm.
Willowbank Karting Raceway is located adjacent to the Queensland Raceway 1km off Cunningham Highway (Highway 15) on Champions Way, WILLOWBANK.
