Two in a row for Woolston
10 August, 2003 - Victorian driver Troy Woolston claimed his second successive Ford KartStars round today at Sydney's Oran Park circuit in the closest and hardest fought final of the 2003 Series.
The CC Racing kart piloted by Woolston crossed the line first in the Pre-Final ahead of Lawncare Kart Works driver, Ben Guest and Championship leader, Andrew Thompson aboard his Fuchs Silkolene entry.
Woolston led the field through the ARC turn one sweeper for the first of twenty five times in the Final but his time at the front was short lived with Thompson taking over the lead when they headed across the top of the hill for the first time followed by Guest, Woolston, Blake Mills and Reif Corbett.
The top five continued to run nose-to-tail for the next few laps before Corbett's electrical problem that had plagued him all weekend long started to show again allowing the leading quartet to pull away. Throughout the ensuing laps Mills was showing his cards as a serious contender moving up the order to snare the lead when Thompson ran wife exiting the Comer middle corner on Lap 10.
Mills continued to lead the way closely followed by the trio behind him. But with the Championship at stake Woolston didn't give up and made a last lap pass to take the narrowest of victories ahead of Thompson, Mills, Guest and New Zealander, Karl Wilson.
Following his victory Woolston rated the Final as one of the toughest races he has ever been in while Mills was ecstatic with his performance despite lamenting over what could have been. "When I got the front I thought to myself hey I could win this thing but I left half a gap on the last lap and Troy took the opportunity with both hands, but I can't day how happy I am to finally show some really good pace and finish on the podium," said 15-year-old Mills.
Today's results now means that the 2003 Ford KartStars Series will now go down to the wire between Woolston and Thompson at the final round at Bolivar Raceway in South Australia next month
