Saint-Eustache, Quebec, June 9, 2004. -- As the Formula I show pays its annual visit to Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix on the Gilles-Villeneuve racetrack, one of Quebec's future motorsports stars is going back to Europe to enter a high rolling championship and improve still his driving technique. Kevin Lacroix, a young 15-year old kart driver from Saint-Eustache, will be racing next weekend on La Conca racetrack, in Muro Leccese, Italy, in the third round of the Open Masters Championship.
"It's tough to leave Montreal when the Grand Prix fever hits the city," admits Kevin. I would have loved to watch all those activities and be part of one of the street fests, but fate dealt me a calendar date for the Masters. When we started planning this championship, no one knew whether there would be a Canadian Grand Prix. But I'll be able to better focus on the job at hand in Italy when we set foot in Europe. Driving in this championship is so precise, I find it a real challenge every time I get on the track."
Improving the machine
In Muro Luccese, Kevin will be back with his CRG Dutch team that develops his karts abroad. "The way to prepare a race is very different overseas, says Lacroix. The engineers work a lot with their data and adjust the kart for the race at hand. This preparation technique is important because the karts have very little differences. During qualifications, you can easily have more than 40 karts in the same second! I like that kind of rivalry because it forces me to be more focused and to avoid mistakes on the track. Moreover, in this kind of racing, you have to beware of those behind you: at the smallest hint, they'll push you off the road."
Back in Ontario
Kevin will be back next Monday to finish school. And his next race will be in July for the second round of the Stars of Tomorrow Series.
