O'Dell win track championship, Bequette claims first win
DOE RUN, Mo. -- (Sept. 14, 2001) Derek O'Dell not only drove himself to a feature win Friday night at the Doe Run Raceway in the Multi class he also secured enough points to win the 2001 track championship.
O'Dell and Dustin Barks hooked up for most of the feature and battled side by side around the track. O'Dell finally made a pass around Barks, but a yellow flag once again placed Barks out front. Following the restart O'Dell was once again able to make it pass Barks and from that point on the race belonged to O'Dell. A short time later mechanical problems forced Barks from the race leaving him in 12th place. O'Dell's victory placed him far enough in first place with only one points night remaining to capture the track championship. Brett Anderson finished in second place in the feature with Kary Buckley third, Matt "Catfish" Ponder fourth and Tommy Boyd fifth. They were followed by Todd Mecey, Todd Crabdree, John Dennis, Kyle Danback and Shawn Merrill.
Barks won the first heat race with Boyd second and Buckley third. O'Dell won the second heat with Tyler Robbins second and John "the Flying Mortician" Sherrill third. Tyler Richardson won the third heat with Anderson second and Casey Barnhouse third. Richardson won the trophy dash with Barks second and Anderson third. Eric Giessing was the winner of the "B main with Ponder second.
In the Mini Stock class, Tom "Blackflag" Bequette of Farmington picked up his first feature win of the season as he held off Bruce Boren and Terry Harris for the win. Boren finished second with Harris third, Dustin Winick fourth and Keith Buckley fifth. They were followed by Chuck White, Rich Ruch, Jathan Cruse, Chris Boyer and Mike LaBrot.
Boren won the first heat with Winick second and White third. Harris won the second heat with Bequette second and Buckley third. Bequette also won the trophy dash with Harris second and Buckley third.
In the Stock Kart class, Michael Harp was the feature winner with Landon Barks second, Joey Boyd third, John Leahy fourth, Brad Paquet fifth, Billy Joe Beard sixth, Jordan Turner seventh, Bobby Ridings eighth and Kelly Burch ninth. Harp won the first heat with Barks second and Leahy third. Barks won the trophy dash with Harp second and Leahy third.
In the Super Stock Karts, Sam Miller of Farmington picked up yet another feature win with Jimmy Bridgeman second, Kyle Jarrett third, Billy Joe Beard fourth, and Joey Boyd fifth. Bridgeman won the heat race with Boyd second and Miller third. Miller won the dash with Bridgeman second and Jarrett third.
The final points night of the 2001 racing season will be held Friday night.
