Welk Races to Two Podiums in Exciting Stars of Karting Event

New Castle, IN. - Steve Welk returned to the podium of a karting event for the first time since he claimed victory in the SCCA Pro Racing/WKA Constructors Cup in November of 2002. Welk took home second and third place finishes at the second round of the Stars of Karting East Championship which was held at the beautiful New Castle Motorsports Park.

The weekend started off Friday with testing on 1 mile New Castle circuit. Welk was in the top 5 in times most of the day and his C-G Racing team felt confident going into the double header weekend. Saturday's qualifying session confirmed Welk's speed as he put his Merlin/Comer combination fourth on the grid. The Pre final would see the karting veteran maintain his position to start the final. The Saturday final would prove to be one of the most exciting of the weekend as Welk battled for third the entire race, holding off no more than 4 competitors during the 18 lap final. On the last lap of the race Welk put on a great pass into one of the New Castle hairpins to take third place. He held on for the rest of the lap to claim his and the Merlin Chassis first podium in Stars of Karting Competition.

Race two was held on Sunday and Welk was looking for more success. This day would be a little harder than Saturday as the 21-year old placed a disappointing eighth on the grid in qualifying. The prefinal would see Welk improve one spot to start seventh for the second final of the weekend. After a good start Welk steadily moved up the order to find himself in fourth position when the white flag fell. The final lap would prove to be extremely wild. With under a half a lap to go a random rain shower began to fall on the New Castle track. At the same time the leader broke coming down the final straight away. This made the battle for second the battle for the lead with one of the competitors pushing to hard and spinning in the final corner. Welk who had recognized the rain made sure to bring his Merlin over the line and overtook the two stalled karts claim a second place finish.

"This was an incredible weekend. Saturday's race was just a blast to be in. I knew that the other guys had a bit on the straights over me, so I just fought them as hard as I could in the infield in order to stay close, Welk said after the race. It was a good race and the Merlin Chassis was incredible. Sunday's race just proves to me why the Fourth of July is my favorite holiday, because I got a gift on the last lap. I was hoping something would happen with the battle for second, but the rain and the leader going out were something that I had not even considered. I got lucky this time, but I will take it. I really have to thank C-G Racing, Merlin Chassis, and Comer engines for all their support."
