PHIL DE LA O SHOWS SPEED AT SECOND ROUND OF CKI FLORIDA CUP
"Arizona pilot competes in Rotax Senior and KF2"
Phoenix, Arizona -- March 3, 2010 -- Team Top Kart USA driver Phil De La O made the cross country trek to the Sunshine State of Florida to compete in the second round of the Championship Karting International Florida Cup presented by Supertune USA and DeFrancesco Racing. Taking place at the Homestead Karting Complex on the grounds of the Homestead-Miami Speedway, De La O would do battle in both the Rotax Senior and KF2 categories.
Rotax Senior would provide the Arizona driver's best results of the weekend as Saturday morning he was able to turn the second quickest time of the qualifying session. Starting on the outside front row, De La O ran into some first corner trouble and was relegated down the running order. Battling hard with unfamiliar competitors, De La O's Top Kart would be involved in an incident classifying him in the 15th position.
Starting the main event from near the tail of the field, De La O proved to be one of the quickest karts on the track as he made quick work of his rivals. The Senior rookie would slice his CMW Engines powered Top Kart through a stout field of drivers to claim the fourth position when the checkered flag flew.
The second day of competition in the Rotax Senior class was just as fierce as the first one as all the competitors had stepped up their game in order to bag a win. De La O would turn the fifth quickest time in the qualifying session and would back that up with a solid fourth place result in the heat race. Disaster would strike De La O in the final as the Red Bull sponsored driver would be involved in an incident while running with the lead pack of karts. Falling to the tail of the field, De La O showed his never give up attitude as he battled his way back to a solid tenth place result.
"The Rotax Senior field is very tough," expressed Phil after the event. "The drivers are all very good and the packages are so evenly matched. I learned a lot racing this weekend with drivers that I look up too. I am looking forward to coming back in two weeks time and battle for the win."
De La O would pull double duty during the second round of the Florida Cup as he would also battle hard in the KF2 class. During Saturday's racing action, De La O would qualify his Aerial Castro tuned Top Kart to a second place result before finishing fifth in the prefinal. Some minor changes back in the paddock saw De La O find his speed again for the final as he progressed forward to the third position and scored his first podium of the weekend.
Sunday's KF2 racing action would be a disappointing one for the Arizona resident. A solid qualifying effort would classify De La O in the third position but a mechanical failure in the prefinal would result in a disappointing eighth place result. Putting it all on the line for the final, De La O looked like a seasoned veteran as he moved through the field. Turning some of the quickest laps of the race, the Top Kart driver would slot himself into the second spot before a broken chain ended his race just after the half way mark.
Phil De La O and De La O Motorsports will enjoy very little time off as they will be back to Florida for the final round of the CKI Florida Cup in two weeks time. Looking to score race wins and podiums, De La O will once again compete in the Rotax Senior and KF2 categories.
