PHIL DE LA O IS VICTORIOUS AT CKI FLORIDA CUP
"Arizona pilot shows speed in Rotax Senior and KF2"
Phoenix, Arizona -- March 18, 2010 -- Team Top Kart USA driver Phil De La O continues to impress in his first season of senior competition as he scored the KF2 victory in the final round of the Championship Karting International Florida Cup presented by Supertune USA and DeFrancesco Racing. Taking place at the Homestead Karting Complex on the grounds of the Homestead-Miami Speedway, De La O would claim four top ten results including three top five finishes in the final weekend of competition.
Competing in the KF2 class, De La O would show his speed early and often as he battled with a few of the nation's best pilots. Taking the pole position in Saturday's action, disaster would strike De La O in the prefinal as an engine failure would force him to retire from the racing action and start at the tail of the field for the main event. Looking to impress, De La O would be on a mission in the final as he charged his way through the field. Battling wheel to wheel with fellow pilots, De La O would advance into the top five and would claim a fourth place result when the checkered flag flew.
Sunday's KF2 action would provide much better results for the Arizona pilot as a third place result in qualifying and the prefinal would set up an inside second row starting spot for the main event. Taking advantage of some other driver's misfortunes, De La O took the point until the final laps before being aggressively overtaken entering turn four. With contact made, De La O would lose the position but would regain the top spot and race win after officials deemed the actions of the other driver unnecessary.
"I am very happy to have won the KF2 race this weekend," stated De La O at the podium presentations. "The class is competitive and the overall package is fast. I love the competition and challenge and am happy that I was able to come out on top."
The Rotax Senior class would be De La O's second class of the weekend and a stacked field would provide some great racing action. After qualifying on the outside front row, De La O would finish outside the top five in the prefinal as an opening lap incident sent him spiraling down the running order. Looking to redeem himself in the final, the Top Kart driver drove a clean smart race and was able to come home with a solid fifth place finish
Sunday would prove to be a little tougher for De La O after claiming the third fastest time in the morning's qualifying results. Some tough racing and hard on track battles would force De La O to lose positions and regain them back, only to lose them again. After the dust had settled, the Senior rookie would come home with another top ten result.
De La O added, "Rotax was a tough go for us this weekend but sometimes it is just racing luck. I am happy that I was able to show the speed to run with the top guys and am looking forward to the rest of the season."
Phil would like to thank his sponsors and supporters for a successful year to date: Grand Products, Team Top Kart USA, Bridgestone Racing Tires, Maxter Engines, De La O Motorsports, Red Bull, AM Engines, Northwest Floor and Wall as well as his mechanic Airel Castro.
